Shopjimmy

Post by jwax »

Anybody ever deal with these folks?
https://www.shopjimmy.com/

I'm swapping the power supply board in an older Olivia 27" LCD TV, and found one at this site for $14!
Of course, they're "out of stock" at the moment, but wonder how they can sell a power supply for so cheap.

Are they for real?

I bought a board set, main board and power supply, for a Vizo a few years ago. It was around $30 for the set. The new main board had an issue. They replaced both boards and did not want the first set back.
I guess if you have a factory direct contact the real cost is pennies!

Yes, they are real.
I haven't used them myself, but plenty of other people have.

Ah, jwax.....
They don't seem to be selling the actual Power Supply PCB.
{Unless they are selling it under a different brand that uses the same Power Supply.}
But a repair kit, that has the most common parts that fail in the Power Supply.
They remind me of Matelectronics{Now Defuncted}.
They use too sell lots of rebuild kits, for several brands.

I know of PTS: http://www.ptselectronicsinc.com/
They sell and rebuild PCB's, and sometimes take your old board as a core to be rebuilt.
I've used PTS for many years, and most of PCB's that I've gotten from them were fairly good.

Janitor Tzap- It sure looks like the power supply assembly-

https://www.shopjimmy.com/olevia-eec-pw ... pply-unit/

They claim to harvest cosmetically inferior TV's for their good components.

Have to wait and see if I actually get to buy one.

It would of helped that you include a model number of the set,
and possibly a part number off the power supply board.

Have you started looking through the power supply yet?
Since your waiting.
I'd start looking for damaged components in the Power Supply.
If your lucky, it will just be capacitors that have failed.

I've used Shopjimmy and PTS, both places are reliable.. Shopjimmy isn't so good with shipping cost, they were kinda high a few times for piddley parts.
I used to use PTS a lot for tv tuner repairs. and they rebuilt a complicated power supply for a huge plasma tv for me once. It would have been cheaper for the owner to get a new tv..But he wanted this one repaired since it fit over his fireplace and him and his wife were used to the tv..
it was a 56" tv and weighed a ton. also doubled as a space heater. 750 watts

Yeah,
Shipping can kill even a really good deal on parts. :(
I've ordered parts through RockAuto, because they were cheaper than getting the parts locally.
Even with the shipping cost.
But....
How the parts are shipped.
{Ground 10 days to ship} Cheapest
{Fast Shipping 2 - 3 days} Moderate Cost
{Next Day} Most Expensive
Also who was doing the shipping.
USPS / UPS / FedX
Will impact the price on the shipping.
Sometimes you can get "Free Shipping" on a item(s), but that normally doesn't happen unless your over the minimum ordering price.
Example: If your order is $300.00 or more Shipping is free.

STORY:
My folks had a 35" Sony TV that was in a Entertainment Center.
The center also held the VCR/DVD/CD Player Recorder, the Satellite Receiver Box, AM/FM Stereo Receiver, Tape Deck, Turntable, Tapes, DVD's, CD's, and Records.
So.......
When the old Sony TV finally gave out.
Getting rid of the Entertainment Center wasn't an option.
Thus, finding a new TV that fit the Entertainment Center, was a problem.
After much measuring of televisions.
I came up with a 40" LG TV, that just fitted in the space that the old Sony TV sat in.
Had to make a box to set the 40" LG TV on, because the screen would sit to low otherwise.
But, the box is good for extra storage.
:P

Janitor Tzap- TV Model is Olevia 427-S12, and power supply is DPS-161APE.

Looks like some carbonization on the board around D903, and C903 (100 MFD, 100V), but haven't got the time to dig in deeper.

Hmmm.........

There are a lot of poor grade Electrolytic Capacitors that have been showing up in lower quality brand TV sets.
{Especially in Power Supplies.}
The carbon on the board could be left over from an arc, that was caused by the Capacitor leaking fluid.
Or some of the flux used during the soldering of the Power Supply PCB wasn't washed off completely in the cleaning phase of the board.
Thus, over time as the dried flux started to carbonize, and it would eventually cause a short.
Or
The carbonization was caused by the Diode over heating when a voltage spike/surge came through the AC Line.

When you get time.
Check the Diode and see if it is shorted or open.
Same with the Electrolytic Capacitors.
{A good ESR Meter would be helpful in testing most of the Electrolytic Capacitors, and saving you time troubleshooting.
Just make sure the Electrolytic Capacitors are fully Discharged first.}

A $14 power board? It is indeed a little cheaper, what is the market price?

The diode was a 9 volt Zener, so swapped it out, and the capacitor. No joy.
Inspection under a heat sink on a 8-pin dip reveals the IC blew a lead right out of the case. Dunno what IC it was, other than, "IC900".
Without a part number for "IC900", I have no way to replace it. Suppose I could buy a Sams Photofact, but the new board coming is $25 shipped. :(

Hmmm............

I looked at the under-side pic of the power supply board that Shopjimmy is showing.
IC900 is a specialty power IC (7-pin), that have been known to fail because of a sudden surge.

I've replaced these IC's in a lot of DTV converter boxes.
The lettering on the IC is hard to make out, and only after I removed it from the PCB and got it under a bright light.
I was then able too make out a part number.
It was TNY277PN.
{I got them from Digikey. }

In that under-side pic of the power supply board you can see diodes, and 3 leg regulators going to that IC900.
Make sure they are okay, before you go a head and replace that dead specialty power IC.

WOW! Thanks Janitor Tzap! Precious info!
I don't suppose you would sell one of those, if you have any spares?

Appreciate your help!

Nope, sorry.
Check DigiKey, Newark, or E-bay.
Price will vary.
But expect to spend a buck or two for the part,
and several dollars on the shipping.
