Having a problem with a triac

Post by 1moldmaker »

I am having a problem with a triac BAT16, when I trigger it with an optocoulpler it turns on but the voltage is half of what it should be, Im trying to make a switch for 12 to 24 vac, I have tried a Q4006l triac but still have the same results

With 12VAC applied, what do you expect the result to be?

at least 10 vac, I do expect a small voltage drop, but not by half

Triggering on both half cycles? (positive and negative) Triggering on only one will cut by half. Every pass through zero turns TRIAC off.

any suggestions on how to get around this, should I try a sensitive gate triac?

Here is the schematic, I figured it out last night I changed the 150 ohm resistor to 100 ohms works good now, thanks

How would you trigger a triac with a transistor, or would it just stay on and not turn off

12VAC to 24VAC like you said before? Or, 230VAC as diagram shows?

I do not like "pulling teeth" to get info.

A page I found via Google says you can trigger by DC. While transistor is on TRIAC remains triggered. Turn transistor off, TRIAC is also off. (or reverse, depending if you put transistor as common collector or common emitter.)

That's similar to what I put in a circuit when repairing an antique SCR based vehicle battery charger.
