My WiFi Clock I built.

Post by dacflyer »

Ok, so i said to myself I am sick-n-tired of setting clocks. Atomic clocks are not reliable, they loose signal a lot over here on the east coast.
So I talked to a buddy of mine, which is only 1.5 hrs away from me. I told him what i wanted and he suggested to use the ESP32 Wroom Module.
I told him i already had my display built and tested, so all I needed was him to write the code for me. The Modules were about $20.00 from Mouser.
We got the code loaded and tested. had a few bugs, But easily fixed. My displays used recycled Double Digit Displays I recycled from old pedestrian cross walk signals with the count down. I recycled the digits, had to rewire the displays, I added in the "Large digit display drivers". you can find them on ebay.
I had to modify the drivers, They have 15 ohm chip resistors on them. I had to replace them with 100 ohm resistors. each segment needs one, There is also one for the DP. I made my own Colons for the clock. Another buddy that does wood work helped me make the case, I had the know how, just not the tools, he also donated some scrap red and white striped Cedar wood, looked and smelled great. The clock uses a 12v power supply, with a 5v regulator.
The clock also uses some 3.3v for the logics and the RTC.
It really looks good and it is bright as well. the color is called NEON RED. and it really is a exact match. If you ever looked at a red neon sign. you'll know.
I used to make neon eons ago. I kind of miss it.
Sorry if pictures don't post in order.

Looks good. :)

Only........
It seems strange that the Transit Group was just throwing out perfectly good LED Cross Walk Display Boards. :/
Up here, they only replace the display if there are too many burned out LED's.
There are still even some of the old style Bulb Displays around yet.
But with the push for better power efficiency, they are being phased out.
Though, as a stop gap cost saving measure, the city is just replacing the old bulbs with LED bulbs.

Wow,, Led bulbs in place of light bulbs.. Does that even conform to the standards for color or brightness ?
Were not allowed to do that here. The only bulbs we have left are maybe 1 or 2 intersections that have 8 inch heads, and an Arrow.. And since they don't make 8 inch led arrows,, Were forced to keep that arrow as a bulb and not an led.
I even tried to make an led arrow, by masking a ball with tape , then spray painting it.
Looked good and was bright, but not allowed. DOT said it did not conform to their standards.
Oh well...
