Well, here's a toaster that certainly would entertain you.

I well remember a mechanical TV channel changer. No not the ultrasonic one from Zenith, this was purely mechanical. It used a hand hand held box with a big knob, a long cable, like a bicycle brake cable and a clamp-on-the selector knob box for the TV.
Yup, you turned the hand held knob, the cable core moved, and the set changed channels...sometimes!
Pro: It worked in a power failure
Con: The TV didn't

Let's not forget the 'Whole House Antenna' scam and their lackluster performance, unless you could rotate your house like an antenna :-)
(The emoticon at the end of the last sentance was entered as ":-)" without the quotes, and the editor changed it to the Smile you see !

And then there's the venerable Zenith 'Space Command' ultrasonic remote that could be tricked by shaking a handfull of change near it and it would go nuts.

Or the hot dog cooker that 'electrocuted' the hot dogs with 120 vac directly. It was a plastic box with two rows of prongs and for safety a detachable cover with the power cord. A couple of minutes, a few spins of the wattmeter and the dogs were done.
Now don't laugh. Go try it with a couple of momma's old forks, or ones liberated from a chow hall, a power cord and you don't touch the stuff when it's plugged in. Done with that, now go get a whole pickle....!

Ah ha, those were the days.

Hi,

The Sony Betamax lasted for some years but then lost out to VHS. I think it tanked a little after year 2000 or so, maybe sooner.

The best has yet to come though with *congresswoman elect* Alexandria Ocasio Cortez's little statement:
"We need to invent technology that hasn't been invented yet".
Gee thank you Ocasio for that wise and profound statement
Thanks to her we now know what we have to do when before we didnt have a clue

I remember that hot dog cooker, i actually made something like it for science fair back when i was in elementary school. I was to smart for my own good back then,,the stuff i made for science fair back then, would be considered devious now days.

i still have 2 Betamax players made by SONY, they came out of one of the 1st few video Juke Boxes.. which failed quickly.
the players were nicely made.
i still have a few betamax tapes. one is a Duran Duran concert.
but most of the betamax tapes i ever saw were ####3, never saw too much commercial content or movies.
i still got a shoe box full of vintage 8MM movies.. Hmmmm

Yeah,
The old nails hammered in to a 2X4, and wired to an AC Lamp cord and a switch.
{Had to use the skinless Hot Dogs mostly, because Casing Wieners would tend to pop or explode.}

I've repaired a few Beta Machines, but I never saw one of the "Beta Juke Boxes".
Well, do yourself a favor if you going to still hold on to those tapes.
Pull them out every two years or so, and put them into a "Video Tape Rewinder/Fast Forwarder".
Don't put them in to your BetaMax too do the FF/RW of the Tape.
You'll end up having the tape getting stuck in the machine, and possibly ruining the tape.
I've had, as well as customers putting in old tapes into they're VCR's and have this happen.
This is caused by the binding material on the tape,{A type of glue} that hold the Iron & other metal oxides to the Video Tape.
Here's a good {Downloadable PDF} guide on Video Tape Storage: http://thehaisho.com/forums/download/file.php?id=2

I took my Dads old 8MM movies, and put them on VHS tapes, and then transfer them to DVD.
The 8MM films were starting to break down when I put them on tape.
Thus, the colors were some what yellowed.
Luckily, The Panasonic Color Camera had Color and Tint adjustments.
So I could compensate for the yellowing, and get the colors back too somewhat normal. :D

i used to love to watch the hotdogs swell up and start splitting,, i used to crack up about it,, kind of reminded me of some lewd stuff..lol
once a friend tried to feel the hotdog to see if it was warm yet, before i could say NOooooo, she grabbed it and got a nice jolt..made her pee herself, to which i laughed like hell at her.. she though it was funny too afterwards.. one thing about cooking them, once the ends start to sizzle and arc, unplug it right away, otherwise it will smell like a bug in a bug zapper burning..

thanks for the info on the Tapes and Film, the film has been in a dark cool area, but i'll look into getting it transferred soon.
i am willing to sell the betamax players if interested..

Don't put it off for too long! :!:

Most old film is acetate based, and if left for too long.
It will destroy itself, and is even known to CATCH FIRE in some cases!
Here's the Wikipedia page on Cellulose Acetate Film: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellulose_acetate_film

Now another product that failed.......

The Sony eMarker

This pocketable device was little more than a clock in disguise: you would press its button when you heard a song on the radio that you liked; plugging it in to your PC later allowed you to see what was playing at the time the button was pressed. It failed at retail and was eventually recalled.

Hi,

Anyone remember VHS tape players? Ha ha.
These things are getting phased out too if they havent been already.
I have a VHS recorder/player i havent used in probably 5 years now. It's been unplugged.
