Another transformer question... ( trivia question)

Post by dacflyer »

i am trying to figure the secondary current for a transformer question i have to solve. ( trivia question )

it shows primary 120v with 1 amp load.
secondary is 12.6 - 0 - 12.6 (center tapped) what is the total of the 2 secondary currents ?

i cannot figure it out..

120 volts X 1 amp = 120 watts
12.6 + 12.6 = 25.2 volts
120w / 25.2v = 4.76 amps

Should be looked at as VA and not watts. Is the secondary load pure AC or DC? If DC with capacitor input filter, the load current will have to be reduced quite a bit. Worst case is with full wave bridges and depending on the setup could reduce allowable current to 50% as compared to a pure AC load.

secondary is just AC straight out of the transformer.

I think in this case since dac mentioned it was just a trivia question we can define it as a pure AC load with 100% efficiency.

AC- looks like you are good to go. And especially, if its just sine wave to sine wave, VA will hardly be a factor.
