anyone else had this problem ? ceiling fan light going out

Post by dacflyer »

i worked on one of these fans (Harbor Breeze brand) tonight for a customer.. it acted like a bad switch...light would come on and then after a few min. or less it would turn off..
i was unable to reset it unless you turned power off and then back on. ( not by the pull chain)
so i did more investigating, i found a 3 wire module inside of it.. red, white and black wires.
this is a protection device that is supposed to prevent you from having too much light.
(wattage limiter) this is a module that has XL-190 on it.
so i assume it limits the wattage to 190 watts. any more and it disconnects the lights.

well since this ceiling fan has a 3 light kit and and they are intermediate based bulbs, and i have not seen any wattage of bulbs that could get up to 190w combined.
i decided to bypass this module since it is not available in stores.

here is what you can do.. 1st turn off power...DUH!
remove the light fixture from the fan , usually 3 screws. you will see the module and the 3 wires.. red, black, white. cut the 3 wires, wire cap the white wire..
and then connect the black and red wire, cap with a wire cap. reassemble , turn power on ( smoke test...lol ) and it will work like new.

if you use the normal bulbs you will be fine..
the module i removed , i dissembled it and had to see what makes it tic,,and see what failed.
on this one there is a few components, a relay and a capacitor. on this one the capacitor has failed.. 220uF at 25V. replacing this fixed the problem,
your issue may vary.

Technology to protect the stupid human has failed again!
Why am I not surprised?

The person who designed the circuit forgot to allow for in rush surge.
The circuit was probably designed only to handle 3, 25W candelabra style bulbs.

What wattage are the bulbs he had in the sockets?

It was really a useless design!
When the government gets done restricting our lamp purchases, there will be no high wattage lamps.....

the fan came with 3 40w lamps, they are still the original bulbs so 120 watts total.
the module is rated for 190Watts.

the fan takes these stupid bulbs, i have seen them as high as 60W.
have not seen any bulbs higher than 60W yet in that intermediate base.

here is a link to what the bulbs look like it is like a A15 size appliance bulb with a intermediate base
i have seen come with candelabra base as well

https://www.1000bulbs.com/product/3462/IN-L2716.html

so if you did have 3 60W bulbs then you have 10watts to spare, before the unit trips, and then it's lights out..lol

And to add- from my tests, the typical fan motors I have tested uses 13,20 & 27 watts for lo, mid and hi speed. So if one would want 60W bulbs-never turn the fan on- just use it for a ceiling fixture to give adequate lighting when inserting your cel phone into the Microwave Oven
