SDCC compiler problems

Post by ian »

Guys, I am trying to run some C programs from the Silicon Labs website. I'm using
the Silicon Labs IDE and the SDCC compiler. I'm fairly new to this but it seems
nothing short of ridiculas. I can't find ANY documentation on the SDCC compiler.
The users manual doesn't describe any syntax, error codes, functionality, or
operation. The Silicon Labs IDE is just as cryptic. I can figure out ANYTHING
if there is documentation, but I've been struggling for days on how to configure
the IDE and how to deal with the cryptic and non-documented errors.

Even the examples and application notes from the SiLabs website are missing
fields to enter, include files, and undefined parameters. I even bought test
boards from SiLabs with software and those examples don't work either.

Am I missing something? I know the SDCC is popular but I'm aghast at the lack
of resources and astonished at how this software can be so popular.

Can anybody recommend a good programming chain for compiling code and downloading
it to an 8051 chip that won't be a heap of trouble and leave me in the dark?
