12/24 DC motor help needed

Post by cheapNdisgusting »

I have a motor off of an Eagle 2450 trolling motor. It is 3 speed, 12vdc or 24vdc and is perfect for my project. Size and shaft dia. are perfect.

My problem is that the motor has no wiring diagram that I can find anywhere.

It is a sealed motor with; 5 wires sticking out:
Red 10ga. wire (probably +)
Black 10ga. wire (probably -)
Red 14ga. wire (probably speed control)
Yellow 14ga. wire (probably speed control)
Green 14ga. wire (probably speed control)

So, it's a 3 speed motor (no reverse) that will run on 12 or 24 vdc.

How do I hook it up to run properly and not smoke it? The controls will eventually be;
On-off switch, speed selector switch , and the 12/24 thing will need to be worked out when I find out how to deal with the 5 motor wires.

Does anyone have any clue how to make it run properly and which wire does what?

Thanks for any and all help.

This is the best I could come up with.

These people supply the motors for Eagle, Motorguide, and even Minnkota.
Send them your question.

Thanks for your input Janitor. I tried the place and they are suppliers for a lot of things but not what I needed.
This motor is old, and Eagle (Byrd Eagle) went out of business in 1997.

Still searching for a way to hook it up.

Thanks again.

Hmmm.........

Eagle was bought out by Motorguide, I believe.
Here's a place in Texas that has been around since 1987.

They have wiring diagrams for Motorguide, and Minnkota.
They may have something close to what you have.

Good luck!

Thanks Janitor, I've been there, copied a bunch of the dia. and unfortunately none are the right ones.

Motorguide did buy out Eagle (and word is they did it because the Eagle was sooo good.) They eliminated the competition. I just wish they sold parts for them. I would buy the speed switch and the 12/24 switch, along with a wiring dia. but no luck so far.

Whenever I'm stumped, I can usually find an answer by investigating more deeply. Take it apart and look at the construction. (ie: Do some reverse engineering.)

Ohm out the wiring. See how many independent windings there and the resistance of each winding. If some of the wires are winding taps, then find out which two are the ends of that winding. They will have the most resistance between them.

Does the motor have permanent magnets? If not, one winding is a field winding.

Find other 12/24 electric trolling motor connection diagrams. All of the manufacturers copy each other's ideas. One of the connection diagrams from other makers has to be similar.

Thanks Bob, That's probably what I will do. Then I'll probably make a post on "How do I put this thing back together".

I found a single speed 12vdc.motor that will fit.

I am still interested in a wiring dia. for the original motor in the first post.

Thanks for the help.
