connecting a 3 phase (480v ac) motor

Post by new guy »

If I have a 3 phase motor (480) volts ac, 25hp . With 12 wires hanging out of the connection head, and none of the wires are labeled. How do I hook it up correctly. I know this motor has six coils inside and I know the numbers that should be on the leads. I can figure out which wire ends make up one coil by using an ohmeter. What I am not sure of is how the coils are mounted inside the motor case so which numbers do I attach to which wire ends?

What brand of motor? No diagram inside the connector box?

A ) Get a product catalog online from the manufacturer and look up the color code.

or

B) Call or see an electric motor shop and ask.

I hope that helps you.

gather any info that is onthe motor data plate, and contact a local electric motor shop.
perhaps they have a diagram of some sorts.. could be possible it is a reversable motor
you said 6 coild, but you do not know the coil pattern. that make it harder to decipher also.
your best bet is to take the data, and call a motor shop.
good luck

All three-phase motors are inherently reversible by simply swapping any two phase leads, preferably phase 1 and phase 3. That's one of their advantages over single-phase motors.

12 leads from a 3 phase motor suggest it can also be wired for 240 volt 3 phase.
Quite often the numbers on/of the wires is inherent in the wire insulation.
The wiring diagram is usually on the nameplate of the motor.
Good luck.
