which microcontroller

Anyone care to expound on the relative merits of pic microcontrollers vs atmega arduino series? I have a fair amount invested in $$ and time on pics, my friend is an arduino fan. I just want some ammunition when he gets in a huff about arduino's vs pics. Thanks

I would think it would have to do with the programming part of it and what the uC can do for you. It's the dilemma I am facing right now. I consider a tiny uC for small stuff but it might be good to work with the larger uC with lots of I/Os.
