Cheap power inverter

My wife was using a 200 watt Whistler inverter in the car to charge her laptop battery. I wasn't there when it happened but it started whining (like a TV does when something goes awry). Smells a little bit, too. I am thinking that it is one or more mosfets that are overheating. But, it seems like the unit still works. I would expect that sooner or later - even if not electrically abused - it will fail.
Thoughts?

I can just guess.
I guess that the transformer overheated and now has a shorted winding. The overload is causing the oscillator to drift lower in frequency so that now you can hear it.

I will have to do some tests on it and post some more info.

Hi,
Yeah, that is a good idea. If you can look at the output waveform and report that back here we can
take a look too and maybe offer some advice.
