Upload .exe file for users to download?

Post by MrAl »

Hello there,

I need a way to upload an .exe file for users here to download and run so that they
can see animations that i might create. The animations would be in .exe form, so
the user would double click on the file and see the animation.

I tried PostImage.org but that didnt work because they want only picture files
like .bmp and .jpg and the like.

Any ideas how i can do this?

I'll try this:

Worked fine for me. I know there are quite a few other file hosting services out there that will allow you
to up/download .EXE files. For big ones, megaupload (I think - gotta ask my oldest about that) works well.

BTW, I see that some people have the ability to attach files to their posts. I don't have that. Do you?

MrAl,

I can't find any of them at this particular time, but usually when I go to reply to an original post from certain newer
members, I see an option to "attach" a file. As far as I can tell, once there is a reply, that option disappears. And, I
saw another post in the middle of a thread where someone had an attachment within their reply. If I come across
one of them again, I'll shoot this thread to the top with a direct reply and a screen shot.

Of course it'd get real ugly if postimage.org tries to display the file, but otherwise I'd try just changing
the zip or exe extension to jpg and fool the host server.

Hello again,

Sofa:
Tried that
It gave an error about not being to decode it or something like that, so it never
gave me an URL to work with.

The reason PostImage gave you a failure is that the header in your file did not match any of the known
headers for the appropriate file type. Try this some time:

Open a Jpeg/GIF/PNG etc. in NotePad (right click -> Open With) and read the first line.
Now do the same with a .EXE file.

Doesn't match. That is how they prevent certain virus' from spreading.

Now certain email providers can be fooled by changing the extension on a file you want to attach. Just
change the EXE to XEX or EEX, etc., just don't do the triple X.

Hi again,

You mean they will accept the upload if it has a strange ending that it doesnt recognize?

MrAl,

Yes, certain email providers can be fooled that way. I have a Y!(ahoo) account that I use to send things back and
forth to myself and I can't send straight .EXE files, but I can if I change the extension. So I use something like .XEX
so I know what type of file it is.

Next point of business. I said that I'd put a screenshot of the attachment feature if I found it. I did! Here it is:

I wonder if it has to do with the different options for "country" in our settings. I use GB english because it displays
the board in a way I prefer. I had changed to US for a while and a lot of things I was used to disappeared, so I
changed back. Perhaps Michael Kaudze knows about this.

Hi Ceasar,

Thanks for showing me that as i almost forgot about that method too
but isnt that just linking to something that is already on the web? If we
already had a way to upload to the web we could link to it here right?
I was pretty much aware of that, but might have forgot how to do that
too though.
I used to do that with AOL and my home page site, but since then AOL
has decided to close down the 'Hometown' so all my pages got wiped.
That means nothing i linked to back then will be accessible on the
site it was linked anymore! Nice of them right?

What i would still need if i was to use that method is a place to upload to,
but since that other site seems to work maybe i'll try that for a while.
I'll post another file for a test...

This is another animation with sound, but the sound might only be available
if you have a speaker in your system...

Actually, what I was referring to was web based email, or as my sons' school calls it "webmail". My main "webmail"
account has certain restrictions as to file types, but if you change the extension you can get around it.

I tried your 2nd program , but errors occured. See below:

Code: Select all

Did you see the screenshot of my reply post to wizguru? The post is under Projects&Kits, 1k-1MHz sinewave generator.
If you scroll down to below the main post window you'll see the attachment area. As I said before, I don't have this in
my posts, normally. It only comes up on certain member's posts. If we all had that ability, we wouldn't need external links.

Hi Ya Guys

Well let's see. MrAl's download worked for me for a short time and then crashed with a not responding and pretty much the errors CeaSar posted. Everything froze and that was that. It was pretty cool right up till...

The attachments thing is an entire new subject. Generally enabling forum members the ability to use attachments is controlled by the board administrators. This is interesting because the ability to do so shouldn't matter which thread or who is being replied to but who is replying. Generally when the permissions are set the person posting clicks a button and can upload a file to be placed in their post.

There are a few downsides to this feature that forums worry about. One of them is that these files accumulate on the forum's server(s) and take up space. Another is what the files are. Any file that is an .exe file could be malicious. Likely the best person to answer questions about this would be Michael?

I doubt just using php bb attachment tags would work.

Ron,

I completely understand the reasoning behind it all, I'm just pointing out that some people have that ability
and I cannot figure out why. See below:

Hi again,

If i am to post animations like this i guess i'll have to do a little more work.

Ceasar, thanks very much for the error report.
It looks like a timer was getting constantly reset which might have caused the crash.
I'll take a good look at it tomorrow.

Ron, yes, Mike would be the person to contact.
