Hi there,


I just downloaded a program that allows you to draw Ascii circuits (rather than graphics) for
posting in forums i guess. I am still trying it out but thought others might be interested too.

So far it's not too bad i guess, but i would like to change some of the characteristics and
havent worked with it enough to do that yet. I cant say i like the diode appearance.

Here is a sample of a battery, two resistors, and a diode circuit with a ground. Note
that i had to edit the ground by hand to get the "+" connection to appear but other
than that it seems ok so far...
I had been thinking of doing a program like this one day, but though about doing a graphics to text
version rather than one that contains an Ascii drawing editor like this one does.

BTW the circuit looks a bit better if it is copy and pasted into Notepad. Something seems to have
gone wrong with this forums "Code" presenter as it inserts more space between lines than normal.

It's the font and line spacing set up by the CSS file. My NotePad uses either one of the MS System
fonts or Lucida Console, sometimes Terminal depending on what I need it for. If you click Format>Fonts
you'll see what is current in your Notepad.

I know I've come across some software like that somewhere, but its been so long I forget where.

That's kinda neat too...is that for electronic circuits though or for general purpose ascii drawing?

Well I wrote it to draw schematics on the PIC List (long story) so all the examples are components. Of course, you can use it for anything and since anything you draw can be saved as a symbol....

But if you look at the bottom of the help page:

resistorv.txt - Vertical Resistor

Ok, the reason for using an ascii schematic is so that it can (or should) work with text
files so that you dont need a graphics program to see the schematic, or have to
upload to another server just to post a simple schematic.
That's nice too though.

I guess I like ASCII art because of all the pinups we use to print on the TTYs at our college ham station back in the um... well back in the day.

Now as fond as I am of my own ASCIICad, I always thought this was probably the one to beat:

(Apparently Germany likes ASCII art). They have a schematic library for it and its Java so can run it on most things (note that ASCIICad runs on Linux under Wine with no apparent problems).

If you scroll all the way to the bottom of the page you listed (http://www.java.de), you'll see a webring widget.
you can check the list of sites in that webring or hit the next/back buttons and see other sites that have
webring links also. Sure are alot of ASCII Art sites still out there.

Back in the ... hehe.

BTW, I was perusing NONAGS.com and they still have a few ASCII Art links there too, but most are dead
unless you are a paying member.
