Electronic Component Store ?

I am looking for a NON-Mail Order store that carries a decent selection of electronic components that is NOT Radio Shack.
I try to order things online but once in a while I need to get something same day.

I live in the Philadelphia, PA area.

our electronic store here sucks too, they are turning into a SHI* SHACK in a way also..
99% of the time i try to get somehting , they say
we do not have it,, but we can order it,, but you will have to wait 2-3 weeks..till we get a full order.
but they sell pleanty of survelance , security , cell equipment etc..Grrrr !

try looking for a good Radio Shack again, it'll have about 50% of most of the common components you'll need.

Fry's Electronics is out here on the west coast, not sure if there where you are yet, but Fry's is like the Walmart (do they have those in PA?) of the electronic components industry.

What is it your looking for? what project are you working on?

Let your Fingers do the walking--in the yellow pages that is. Almost every major city will have a surplus outlet.Theres been anywhere from 1-5 in the Cleveland area forever.

Its hard to find what you want in any area. Even if you find a store it will often not have what you want or have it at a high price. The fact is that electronic components have a tremendous selection available.

In Philly I doubt there is much ( I assume you screened the yellow pages). I would look at phone pooks in the NJ, NYC area. It would only be a few hours ride (Hmmm, postage is looking better already)

I found the same problem down here in Northern Virginia. Web searchs, telephone searches etc. come up empty. But thru a local Ham Radio person, I was pointed to Arcade Electronics in Springfield. Very good store for populuar parts, they carry some subset of the Jameco line for example. Lot's of connectors, boards, boxes, instruments etc. Maybe check with a local Ham Radio club.

How well I remember the suppliers of yore , also Poly Paks by mail order and a local store …Olson’s….that would sell 6 and 12 in sq cardboard boxes of surplus or manufacturers over runs of parts.

When in Washington...KJR land.... I used to frequent Boeing’s surplus sales store, and some nearby spin offs, for bargain wire/electrical & electronic components /alum, etc. Do you know if that still holds true ?

Grab all the old magazines and write off to all the mail-order outfits you can find. When you get the catalogs, check them out as many have stores at their base location. Some stores, like Gateway Electronics in St. Louis (and later Denver) began as surplus stores and then went mail order in addition, keeping their stores as their primary outlets.

Oklahoma City has a store, so they're out there even though it is harder to compete with mail order and the Internet. As mentioned, use the Yellow Pages to search them out. Check with the local ham radio clubs as the old-timers will know. Check to see if there are any vocational schools that still have electronics programs and see if the instructor knows of stores.

I also eschew Radio Shack for anything other than common connectors. Don't ever buy coax from them unless you can stand less than 50% shield coverage. Ever since they started pushing the consumer electronics, they've never been good parts stores, typically carrying only three or four TTL devices, for instance. In 1965, Radio Shack was a pretty good store for parts, carrying a lot of surplus, too.

Edd, I work in Seattle and Kent often (in fact I was in Seattle this afternoon). Next time I'm up that way i'll see if the Boeing Surplus store is still going. I remember the guy who bought a 727 flap motor and used it to power his scale RC tugboat, that could pull a fully loaded ski boat with ease...
