i have a delco radio.. the model #30015807
goes in a GEO Metro
the cassette deck took a dump on me.. gear went kablooey.. i found another cassette deck with good gears..but mechenism was bent all to hell from a forced tape removal..so i took 2 and 2 to make 1, my problem is..cannot figgure out how to time the gears back in. does anyone know where i can find info on the gear timing for this mechenism?

whats so funny about a metro..especially with gas prices now..
i am quite happy with my metro.it runs very well and i only have to fill up once every 2 weeks,
i would have gotten a new radio , but the radios now days are shit.. i cannot find one that has a easy to read display,most are hard to read, they have colored lcd displays. and many tiny buttons.
if i was able to find me a flourescent display cd' mp3 player radio then i'd consider it.. but right now i just want to ge tthis one going...

I too drive a Geo Metro. My suggestion is to turn it in to the insurance company. They will probably total the car, and then you can go get another one! If you don't like that option, you could always go to your local salvage dealer and get a used radio. If your still determined to repair the one you have, maybe you could run the arm to it's extreme position and then run the gear to it's extreme position and kerwammy, stick it back together!

I don't know where you'd find the timing info you want. My guess is that if the gear wheels don't have alignment markings you're gonna be stuck with a trial-and-error technique.

none of the junk yards here had any copmpatable radios,,and only 1 had something, but it was no good either..<p>i will still wait and see what turns up here,
there are no timing marks on the gears,but i can tell what position i put them in, but i cannot get the start or eject part timed with other gears, i cannot even find delco on the web, just the dealers. and they are all hush hush,

I have a old Delco radio/tape deck in my car and the AM channels keep drifting particularly when I hit a bump, I tried to take it apart to see if there is a loose connection but the thing has about 6 different PCB positioned in a way that you can't have access to some of them without taking it apart. I wanted to try to see where the problem came from when it was working but I can't do that because I don't have access to the PCB that are in the middle. The Delco engineers went out of their way to make it complicated and, I am sure, expensive. I can't wait to find another to replace the defective one and "fix" the defective one with a sledgehammer.

The only other thing I can think of to suggest is to see if any components or markings in your radio provide a clue to the actual manufacturer. Perhaps you could learn the OEM supplier, but even then it will likely be a steep uphill climb to get the gear timing info from them. Much easier to purchase a new head unit or use a FM transmitter and portable tape player to get your tunes.

the radio is actually made by Delco.
and theres no clue to the timing marks..
i said earlier that i would replace the radio if i was able to find one with a easy read display..but most are back lit LCD that are almost impossible to read in sunlight.. fine and dandy for night use.
i still have and use a lot of cassettes..and use a transmitter for cd use.<p>so enough on alterniatives.. just the facts now..

I could ask... if you are listening to tapes, why does the display even matter? ...but if I were frustrated by the same type of repair problem, my fuse would be getting short too.

display is needed when listening to radio..<p>but no matter , i got it going,, i figgured it out after 3 hrs of fiddling.

Sorry I can’t be of any help on this one. They seem to have two part numbers on the unit.

BUT..I see that unit has a rear speaker fader control, does a Geo have room for a rear seat and speaker?
Have you ever seen “Refrigerator” Perry and “Too Tall” Jones squeezed into an older Honda Civic ?
I see that the two closest units to me in salvage yards is one unit for $20 about 12 miles from
me and another for $45 at about 50 miles distance. There may be a carryover for several
years on newer or older cars using the same unit. The premium salvagers tend to have fiches
and cross reference books with listings of interchange of different years. But I did say
premium……… as their $$$$ cost precludes ‘po ole Joe Blows Reck-Um Yard from having
them.
Lastly, would I be right in the assumption that there is the drive motor for the unit that mechanically
ties into the capstan drive and reel drive mechanics, with the cassettes drop and load function
just being temporarily initialized/cycled by the cassette insertion switch. Then that function is at
rest/disengaged until an unload request is initiated. If you can get the mechanism into such
a disassembled, viewable position, would it then be possible to slowly…and it will be slow….
cycle the unpowered load mechanism by rotating the motor by hand.
In that manner, getting a slow motion view of the gear train+ engagement+ disengagement mechanics
associated with the load/unload function. This being related to the inter positioning of the teeth on the
gear train/and/or/ linear actuator / involved. At least it would then occur at an observable speed instead
of the ~ ½ second flash that it is typically performed in. Then an estimation made of corrective gear
repositioning, if a jamming or end of limit condition is observed.

It drifts, I mostly listen to AM 730, then it starts to sound like a broken speaker, then I set it to 720 or 740 and is sounds better, then it starts to sound bad again, I bring it back to 730. I can do this 10 times an hour. It is a digital radio, not the old one with the variable capacitor.

and the METRO XFI
I have is a 93' model
and yes it has rear speakers.. i actually have modified a computer sub-woofer to enhance the sound some.. but it is no boom system, i do not like them, but with this sub it just set the sound just right.
so i am ok, now.. thanks.
