but the chips are made by RCA , and are kinda hard
to find. but i have had great success with making a few of the guages..

Yes, I remember those digital dashboard modules.<p>They used RCA's 3161/3162 chips. Not a very good choice for A/D converters and display drivers (A/D = analog/digital). <p>Hard to find, easy to destroy accidentally and sort of impossible to get a reading of 0.000 with cero input.<p>If you want to make something like this, try Intersil's line of chips: The ICL 7106 is a single 40 pin chip with the A/D and display driver (LCD, there is also a LED version but I don´t remember it´s number, perhaps ICL 7107) <p>Of course, you may use a microprocessor with AD instead of a "standalone" A/D and display driver.
