Triplex (multiplex ) lcd's

i'd like some information on how triplex(multiplex) lcd's work. i mean--
what are they made off?
where are they used?
who manufactures them?
why would one use them?
and---
is there any way to interface them to a micro other than national semiconductors cop8 micro's, like atmel's?
