The Zapper, or Light Gun as it is called by many people, has been around almost as long as the NES itself. After the Robotic Operating Buddy (R.O.B.) failed as an accessory, the Zapper was bundled in the Nintendo Entertainment System Action Pack along with the control deck, two NES controllers, and the Super Mario Brothers/Duck Hunt game cartridge. By detecting light on the TV screen, the gun could tell what it was pointed at and register the shot as a hit or a miss. Although it's difficult to imagine the NES without the Zapper, there were relatively few games that it could be used for. A list of most of them is below........

http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=527149
When you pull the trigger on the Zapper, a white square will flash where all the available targets are on the TV. The Zapper gun can read the flash and determine if something was hit or not. If the Zapper gun detects a flash, it can tell by the timing which target was hit.
[ September 09, 2005: Message edited by: Chris Smith ]

If you liked duck hunt but can't get your hands on an NES and a Light Gun, I strongly suggest you try "Duck Doom." It is a game inspired by Duck Hunt and Doom, so it's kind of a first person shooter with retro graphics.
As you advance levels you get additional guns. You start out with the hand gun, then move up to a shot gun, then a double barrel. If you continue you can get a chain gun and later on some heavy artillary.
There aren't really any instructions, so as a tip, once you get additional weapons you can switch between them using the number keys.
Here's a link:
http://www.doommarine.com/main/other/duckdoom.php
It's 6.4MB.
There's no gore, blood or fowl language ;-) (sic) Shooting a duck causes it to simply fall or to be vaporized, depending on which weapon is used. I'd rate it teen.
[ September 09, 2005: Message edited by: Matt Nuzum ]

Only if its "Coded" I believe.
Most recon soft ware and hard ware requires a coded signal like the remote on your TV to respond to.
Im not familiar with this system, but like laser guided systems, a beam is not ALL of what it takes, it takes the beam flashing at a particular rate and this feed back is what’s picked up from the random noise, and then compared to a "white signal".
