got a magnavox tv combo...
model CCT194ATO1
vertical amp ic is fried,,
cannot make out the part number
its a LA78?? cannot make out the rest of the numbers,,,can anyone advise me??

Well at least you had the first of the prefixes .
Now to zero in on it. Considering it is in the SIP configuration with the heat sink tab out the top(opposite the pins 180 deg). Next if the unit has 13 pins. That narrows it down to the LA 7837 or 7838 and since you mentioned a 19" set instead of a 13"; that would prefer the heftier '38....so there you are. Being fed from a sweep derived source, if it crashed hard, suspect the low value 1/2 w carbon film fusible to have opened.
Initial failure analysis: probably due to elect caps in vert ckt with developed hi ESR and check that chip to see how (dust dry) that heat sink compound might have been...usually the silicone vehicle migrates lateraly leaving the device hi and dry with an almost nonexistant thermal heat conductivity gradient. So install the new one with adequate fresh "pookie".<p>73's de Edd
