The current spam attack 15/12/2008

Post by bodgy »

If you find one of your genuine posts has been deleted in error, please accept my apologies, it just means I was a bit over eager in the deletion of the spam entries.

As the spammer is online as I type this under their multitudinous personalities, as fast as I delete a swathe they are replacing them.

The attack is coming from a server in the Philippines

regards

Colin

Hi Colin,

Yes, it seems like some kind of bot doing all that spamming.
I think we need the ability to ban these fake members, that's
the only way to stop them, and also to delete multiple posts
by the same member all in one shot.
Last night i think i deleted 1000 posts ore more and they still
came back to add more ads.

Also, the number of names they are using keeps increasing too.
Last night there were only 6 names and today there are 8
names they are using to spam with.

Anyone hear from Mike yet?

That's good to know.

The problem is the registration process.
It's too easy for these BOT's to get passed it.

I'm on a few other forums that I visit.
Their using the latest version of phpBB 2007, and they're not seeing as much BOT activity.

Well, that's what I think Michael should do.

Thanks Vern, that's good to hear. The spammers were really
bad yesterday.

BTW, just curious, is that pic in your avatar your real picture or no?

That was horrible! Looking into more security now. Also talked to a programmer about getting the Bulletin Board moved to Express Engine. So we'll see how that goes!

Thanks for everyone's help with the forum! The computer section should be restored this week.

Have you considered blocking the entire IP range from the spammer at the router or firewall?
No trees were harmed in the creation of this message. But billions of electrons, photons, and electromagnetic waves were terribly inconvenienced!

I'm not sure, but a problem there is that the server(s) being used for the attack appeared to be from the provider of one of the main DNS servers for the Philippines.

Heh. Yup. That is me. Non-staged, all the pics are here.

Summary:

3:20am or so, middle of server upgrades on a cutomer site. We had pulled the racks out of the closet and piled the cables on an adjacent shelf. Tangled in the cable mess was a Cisco router programming cable we needed (look closely u can see it in my hands).

I sat on the floor and began to untangle tohe needed cable from the rest of the bundle. I must have pulled on it too hard at one point as the entire cable bundle fell from the shelf above onto my head.

Jonathan Arehart, friend and fellow admin on the job, grabbed his camera and documented my predicament. You can see me attempting to extract myself in the last picture.

Oh ok, he he. The pic looked interesting so i thought i was ask, and
my first impression was that you were somehow part of the electronic
system and were hard wired into it  and that made it
look like something futuristic and sci fi.
Darken the background and put some smoke coming up behind and
you've got a new sci fi marquee!

I see now that it must have been quite a stuggle to get that all
back together, geeze.

No, what would look better....
Take a picture of a rats nest of wires.
Use that as the back drop.
Then paste Vern's picture with the wires in front.
{The look of disgust on his face is priceless}
