Hi.
Can I have one of these compact flash cards:

Plus this adapter :

And substitute a hard drive getting full 'normal' OS operation ?
-I do not care about speed.

Re: Compact flash IDE ?
I've seen some people using thumb drives to act as a bootable drive.
Placing Ubuntu or some other flavor of Linux on them, with a few ap's.
But the thing is the BIO's on the computer has to have multiple device booting to do this.
So, in theory what you want too do should work.
The only thing that is questionable is the number of read/writes that the flash card is capable of.
I know there have been problems with the many of the first generation Solid State Hard Drives.
In which because of the Virtual Caching that is done by Windows, and many of the other Operating Systems.
It caused the memory to fail, because of constant accessing of the drive.
The cost of the Flash Cards are down, and storage size is continuing to increase.
Thus, if your looking for a way to replace a 2.5" Mechanical Hard Drive on a Laptop to save on weight.
Then it's worth a least trying.

Re: Compact flash IDE ?
Thanks!
No, is not about thumb/USBs...
Constant accessing... heard that before. Any way to disable such, in bios or OS ?
Digging deeper, found this :

I will have to try then...

The BIO's in the computer isn't the problem.Externet wrote: Constant accessing... heard that before. Any way to disable such, in bios or OS ?

But it is the OS that you use.
I haven't played with Vista or Windows 7.
But in XP and 2000, 98, 95, and even 3.11 you can turn off the Virtual Swap Drive.
But only if you had enough extra on board memory to handle running the OS, and other Ap's.
Linux, Unix, and several other OS's use a Virtual Swap Drive as well.
Hope that helps you.

I have a large 8 axis lathe at work using a CF card drive in a 486 industrial PC running a C++ CNC program under DOS that has been trouble free in regards to the CF card drive for the last few years.
