sleepy dvd player

Post by spindown »

Around Christmas time(2008) I bought a dvd "COLLATERAL" from the
the largest retailer. I recently tried to view it on my dvd
player connected to my tv but it would only say "loading".
I tried several times to play it but couldn't get past loading.
Yes the player does play other dvds ok.
Any suggestions? I tried to return it but 3 stores don't stock
it. Thanks Paul

Have you tried the DVD on another player? Perhaps it is a bad copy.

Have you tried cleaning your DVD Lens? Could be dirty.

Make sure the format of the DVD is acceptable with your player. What is the model and make of the player?

Yeah, I agree with Michael.

In that you should try the DVD in another player.

If you have a DVD player in your computer, try it in there.
Also, If you are using NERO.
It has a Disc Info feature that will tell you what the disk format is.
That is, if the Disc doesn't have a major defect on it.
You can then check what formats your other DVD player supports.

There was a recall on some DVD's because of a defect on them, I saw about a month ago.
Do a Google for "Recall on DVD's: COLLATERAL" and see if you get something.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the responses. I tried running the dvd in my computer
but would not play. In the light of my computer room I see there
is a blemish like a groove on the underside of the disc this I
suspect is the cause. I tried the google search but didn't find a
recall of this dvd. Paul

They don't recall DVD's. An error is bound to happen when printing millions of DVD's. Only thing you can do about it is return the DVD or exchange it.

If you want a copy of Collateral on DVD - Amazon.com has used copies starting at $0.12. I got a used copy of Tremors $1.00 and it was in mint condition.

Yeah, that would be a clue that it is bad.

Those are anime DVD's! LOL. And that article says they were duplicated. Major motion pictures Replicate their DVD's. Its a much high quality than duplication.

What is the difference between the two?

I cut my teeth on Video Tape.
Thus, these new terms, and standards for grading DVD's is puzzling too me.
A DVD is a DVD right?
Or no?

Duplication
Starting with pre-manufactured blank recordable discs, the data is "burned" onto the discs one by one. If you have a CD or DVD recording drive (burner), you can duplicate discs on your computer. When larger quantities are needed (perhaps 50 - 500), a "duplicator" is used. The data side of a recordable disc usually has a slight color to it, (yellow, green, blue, or purple, depending on the type of media.)

Replication
Starting with a glass master that contains the data for the disc, a metal stamper is formed. The stamper is loaded into a molding machine and molten polycarbonate is injected into the mold thereby manufacturing the disc with the data "stamped" into the disc. The reflective aluminum layer is applied, and the discs are printed with artwork. Normally, the data side of a replicated disc is prismatic shiny aluminum with no color in the plastic like recordable discs have.

The Bottom Line...

Duplication

* Duplicated discs are great for short runs, however, some CD and DVD drives have trouble reading recordable media. Industry experts estimate that among the current installed drive base (computers and players) about 98% of the CD players will play duplicated CDs, and about 90% of the DVD players will play duplicated DVDs.
* Recordable media is somewhat vulnerable to sunlight. (i.e. direct sunlight hitting the data side of the disc while laying on your desk over the weekend can make the disc unreadable.)

Replication

* Discs that are widely distributed and retail discs are usually always replicated discs. They are tough and compatible, having neither of the concerns of duplicated recordable discs.

Thanks Michael,

Very concise explanation.

I've known about "Stamped" Audio CD's since the mid-80's.
But I never heard the term "Replication" used to describe the process.

"Duplication" I've always associated with pre-manufactured blank recordable discs,
that had the Data "Burned" on to them.

As far as I can remember now.
All the manufacturers have warned against leaving any type of Disc media in direct sun, or UV light.

I've had recordable CD's fail on me, but not because of sunlight.
But more likely because of defects in the Disc's themselves.
{The Disc's were sitting in a draw in my basement.}

Well thanks again.
