What is the difference between a bot and a spider?

Post by bodgy »

As often happens, as I type this I'm the only real registered person on line (apart from 2 anonymous guests) and I'm often accompanied by the Google and Yahoo bots' as I delete the Texas lovers typings, and tonight my cyber companions included the two bots and a spider - what is a spider, internetally speaking?

Colin,

Bots and Spiders are pieces of software Search Engines use to crawl the web (spiders)
and automatically index (bots) web pages for updates and inclusions in their database.
They basically do the same thing, but in somewhat different ways. As long as they are
listed as being from one of the major search sites, there is really nothing to worry about
from them.

Thanks for cleaning up that "Texas lover's" leavings. I hope one day you guys get the
ability to ban obvious spammers. It would be so much easier to stop it immediately
instead of waiting for an admin to do it, and much smoother for the board too.

Thanks for the explanation.

I knew about the 'bots' as my web host has software that'll 'invite then in' to get your site listed, it also logs all the bot trawls, just hadn't heard of a spider before. This particular spider didn't have a name showing, it just said [spider], which is how the bots show up Yahoo.com[bot].

More people may notice it there...just a thought.

I ummed and aahed as to where to put the post and then thought as it dealt with the board rather than computers, I'd post it in general.

But I can move it if you think that'd be more appropriate.
