battery chargers

Post by slipcasedrock »

Hi all. Im trying to build power supply/battery charger for multi batts.
I have many lead acid batts 12volt, 6volt and many ni-mh batts. I also have alot of solar panels, 8-10 volt, 7 2.5 volts,32 1.5 volt,6 5 volt and many smaller .5 volt panels. Any help would help!

So with batteries to be charged and solar panels, you're
probably waiting for a few sunny days?

Solar is free, clouds permitting, and "green". Unfortunately,
its not very reliable and there's a lot of variables that would
make one system pale compared to another.

To kick it off, are you really after one universal rig? Or,
in the interest of time and cost would you settle for a
lesser project that is simple and easy to use?

The reason that I ask is that the batteries that you have
listed require quite different charging techniques due to
their chemistry.

Also, the safest charger is one that works very slowly.
Fast chargers require care not to damage the cells,
or cause a fire hazard.

What you probably need to do is assemble the panels
together (by size and type) to get the largest raw
DC voltage and feed that to a charge controller that
massages the available power, knows what cells are
connected, and can cut off the charge when the cells
are fully charged.

I don't know of any commercial or hobby project
that does it all, perhaps someone else does?

In the meantime, tell us more about the batteries on your
list (voltage, capacity, chemistry).

Comments Welcome!

I have to pull them all out to get exact specs, but off the top of my head I
have 1 12volt 18 amps per hour,10 6 volt 1.2 amps,4 12 volt 2.4 amps,
2 6 volt 9.4 amps, unkown amount of 3.6 volt 60mah batt packs(still checking them).About 200 ni-mh double A's 2500mah.(does that mean 2.5 amps?)And bout 50 of the lesser mah double A's, the mah r mathed with these but not sure of #. and many other odd ball ni-mh batts, these r also matched(even #s of each oddball).I have many parts, diodes, mallory caps 4500 mfd(8 of these all same hieght bout 4 inches but 4 r smaller round)Various voltage regs, proto boards,Um i could go on but would
rather here from you guys what i might need. I can get bout anything I need for cheap. I own/run small scrap yard for metals and electronics.

Good morning all.
Was wondering, Can I go solar panels to solar controler split to 2 battery
chargers, 1 for sealed lead acid batterys, other for ni-mh batts.
then split the battery charger for both into the many different amps per hour for the sealed lead and the other slpit into chargers for the different
ni-mh batts?
