NASA/WPI Sample Return Robot Challenge - $1.5M in prizes!

Post by WPI_Robotics »

Registration now open for the 2013 NASA Sample Return Robot Challenge at WPI

If your robotics program is looking for a challenge, how does a $1.5 million prize sound?

The first NASA Sample Return Robot Centennial Challenge was held at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, MA this past June, and with no winner, registration has just opened for a second competition. The prize purse is at $1.5 million and the lofty goal is to transform autonomous robotic exploration and sample collection without using earth-based navigation technologies.

In June 2012, the first Sample Return Robot Challenge drew 7000 spectators in conjunction with a science and technology festival on the WPI campus. Eleven teams registered to battle for the prize, though none managed to claim it. Industry vets, private inventors, and student teams from universities across the region are all expected to compete next year, but the question remains: Will anyone take home the purse?

If you lead, are in, or are looking to start a robotics team and feel like competing in front of NASA at WPI next June, read up on the Challenge rules here and register to compete.
