R/C Neuton

Post by jwax »

Picked up a battery-powered lawnmower. 24 volt battery runs the cutter blade, nice and quietly.
The Neuton is not self-propelled, just sits on four wheels.
I'm looking for ideas on the best way to remote control this mower from the porch. Only need 100 feet of range, with forward, reverse, left and right control. Simplest is best.
Tracks? Casters and a pair of drive wheels that brake to turn?
Any other veteran R/C mower builders out there?
I'd like to avoid Android control, or microcontrollers, or satellite/GPS solutions- analog ought to be able to do this.
Ideas?

One of the Make Magazine had an article about a gas powered on.
Good Luck

Yes, there is a plethora of gas-engined R/C mowers out there. I'm looking for all-electric.
Thanks!

have you tried the drive system from a junk electric wheelchair ?
if it was me, I'd go to local hobby shop, or look in the servo magazine, and search for a plug and play
r/c motor dual motor controller or use 2 single motor drive controllers, then plug them into a r/c radio receiver. then use the r/c transmitter.. i am sure there is lots of the old r/c style controllers out there that do not interfere with the newer mid freq. styles. all yous need is a simple 4 channel unit.
1-2 channels for the drive, and another channel for turning on the mower. or do that manually.
i'd think building a frame for it would be the hardest part. since i am not a welder.

Thanks dacflyer- dunno about a "junk" wheelchair, but the scavenged R/C controls makes sense.
Hopefully newer digital devices are not rendered useless by the wideband spark generator that is the cutter DC motor. (Lots of hash noise)
I'll look into that dual R/C remote motor controller.

if your concerned about noise, put caps on the motor brushes., that should quench them.
also if need be shield your signal cables. noise might not be a problem.
is your motor a brush motor and not a brushless motor ?
i thought most all mowers were using brushless motors.. Hmmm

B&S made a nice motor for a while. then quit making it,, it was called the ETEK motor
they made 2 different versions of it. 1 was brushed, and the other brushless.
just google ETek motors.

i plan to build me a r/c mower as well one day. not sure if i will use electric mower or gas yet.
lots of videos on youtube as well
