Re: batteries

They leak in the unopened package for me as well. The last batteries I bought were Dollar General brand, $1 each for 9v rectangular batteries. I figure that it's stupid to spend $5 each for a Duracell or Energizer that's just going to leak anyway. If the DG battery leaks, at least I have something t...

Re: Wrong connection!

It's always slow here ... like winter molasses. The Tektronix Oklahoma City Service Center was one of the smaller ones, although we did a big amount of business in the 1502/1503 TDRs and 465M scopes because of the FAA Depot there, Tinker AFB and all kinds of telephone co-ops throughout the state. As...

Re: on the go again - Indiapolis IN

I'm here. Of course, that depends upon how large a circle you're drawing from the epicenter of Indianapolis. At least, I'm closer than Little Rock.

Re: need suggestions - GPS clock

Again, for me, it's frequency. A pulse is fine for setting the time (although there will still be propagation delay issues), but I need a standard phase-locked frequency out, such as 1MHz, 5MHz, 10MHz, the higher the better. Even something more weird that can be divided or multiplied into a decent v...

Re: Opinions please

If the board is that simple, reverse-engineer a schematic so you can see how the diode fits into the circuit and maybe determine what kind it is.

Re: new challenge..

Aaaah, 1963 electronics where even the "F" connector was rare if invented at all. We just installed an "upgraded" DirecTV box(es) in December and they have an "F" connector so you can run an older TV using channel 3. We got a flat screen a year ago and all was fine. Int...

Re: need suggestions - GPS clock

Well, I'm not talking about time here. I'm going for frequency. I'm looking for an oscillator that would be phase-locked to a GPS which would provide near-cesium precision and accuracy. AKA, a GPS-disciplined frequency standard. Meanwhile, since I can't afford an hp 106A let alone an hp 5061A cesium...

Re: Inductors in parallel - Brilliant or wacky?

Inductors with cores won't effect each other that much. their values are usually so large that the small amount of coupling they might have would be minimal. Air core inductors that are even remotely near each other can be disastrous. I hate English sometimes. It's a disaster but it isn't disasterou...

Re: Diode test idea

Put the diode in series with a Mallory Sonalert and battery. For the deaf, sub a lamp for the Sonalert. Sounds one direction, silent the other. Of course, the current and/or voltage may be an issue for anything but rectifiers ... When I was in the Navy, I had a fast and simple fuse checker that was ...

Re: Sealed Lead Acid

I've read somewhere recently that even though we're told that a gel cell can operate in any position and we take that to heart and mount it in funny positions, they really should be mounted such that they're right-side up for the large majority of their life if you want them to last for the large ma...

Ah, you'll figure it out quick enough when you can't figure out how to make up a ZIP code from the postal zone number; or why it is that you can't find any more 2¢ Washingtons when the Post Office replaced them years ago with John Adams. Sorry, Len. The 2¢ers are Frank Lloyd Wright now and the posta...

Re: 4 PIN DIP SOCKET

And then you risk a tinned IC pin getting just hot enough to adhere to the socket pin. Use an IC with gold plated pins -- tough to find these days.
