Re: Treshold of hearing...
I'd bet on some tinnitus. You can beat an external noise against it even if it is not a sine wave. That should tell you about what freq it is. Whenter permanent or response to the environment is a separate issue.<p>I have been in music for the last 35 years, and back when, we were not hip to wearing...

Re: Patent Disclosure in Forum?
So as an example, i would guess that a cat warmer might not be patentable as it is just a heating pad, but you could copyright "Kitty Kuddle" or something if you wanted. Maybe? Although you could possibly pattent some sort of pet detection scheme to control the thing. MAybe?<p>ANyone can m...

Paul, tell us what you are trying to accomplish. What is the end product to be?<p>I had a man bring a circuit to me once that he was struggling to design. In involved some switches and a diode matrix - sound familiar? He wanted each switch to be able to independently turn on combinations of circuits...

Re: DIY Punk Ethic and Culture
Do It Yourself has been a marketing mantra around hardware stores, lumber yards, and now home centers, for at least the last fifty years I can directly report. It might have been a more popular term in the 1950s and 1960s than it is now, but it still carries the same meaning. You would see Do It You...

Re: Radio Shack getting out of parts supply
Something else to be aware of is that there are two kinds of RS store. There are Radio Shack stores owned by the company, and there are franchisees. SOme of these are not full fledged RS stores, they are sort of a half-assed semi RS. Those stores have the flexibility to carry parts and lines that ar...

Re: fuse identification
When an audio amplifier blows fuses, it is usually shorted output devices. In your case probably one of those "hockey puck" amplifier chips. After that, shorted rectifiers come up. Everything else is WAAAY down the list.<p>F4A means Fast 4 amps. The alternative is T4A meaning Timed 4 amps....

Re: Radio Shack getting out of parts supply
SHopping for electronic parts is like buying groceries at Seven Eleven. They are not ripping you off any more than does the Seven Eleven. RS is a convenience store for parts.<p>I stock a lot of parts. I have a 20 foot shelf, three tiers high of those littel 60 drawer part buns. And other storage els...

Re: tranformer overload
Here is an analogy. On your bicycle, the chain and gears transform the motion of your feet into the motion of the tire on the wheel. If you pedal hard it turns the wheel. If I grab the wheel, you will feel it in your foot pedals. My resistance to your motion is transformed back into resistance to yo...

Re: Fusing AC
There may be a specific ratiionale for fusing the neutral instead of the hot in some piece of gear, but in general you should fuse the hot. If the neutral opens as it would if fused, then the mains voltage remains on your circuit. The current path is interrupted, but the voltage is still there with ...

Re: voltage and current regulation
If you are experimenting with LED brightness or something, think about it this way. The voltage across the LED will stay about the same. We put a resistor in series with the LED for the purpose of limiting current through it. We calculate the value of the resistance by using the target current throu...

Google "laser gyroscope"<p>These things could be mounted - one per axis: pitch, roll, yaw - on headgear to sense when the head moved. These would be relative motion readings. To keep track of the real world (absolute motion) you would have to start with an index point. Something like "...

In essence you are looking for a digital voltmeter chip. Try looking for it that way rather than as a seven segment decoder.
