With a line voltage thermostat you'll need suitable wire, did you run romex or low voltage thermostat wire? It is the easiest way to go..

Except for the 9v (you stated 12 to 16v) they all look ok. Never tried a solid state relay on a motor before, I've used them on resistave loads mostly with a lot of success...

A friend wants to control a small pump in a water fountain and I was thinking of using x-10 for it.
It's a 1/5 hp 120v motor do you think I'll encounter any of the above problems?
Or would it be better to have the x-10 control a relay?

The one that I tried was single speed, vibrated like an electric toothbrush (future project?).
It was certianly faster than the manual pick gun.You realy couldn't control the operating frequency but by slightly twisting it, the needle would bind just enough to slow it down..

If you calculate your dropping resistor for about 16ma you should be ok. The dropping resistor will not "eat up" any current since the current remains the same across the components in a series circuit..You might go a little higher on the current if it's pulsed fast enough and the on time ...

If they are carbide remember that they don't flex, and do break easily. I've had broken bits fly in my face ,be carefull..

You can see one at southord.com. They have been around for a while. They vibrate at a high speed (ultrasonic?) and cause the pins in the lock to bounce across the shear line. When this happens you can turn the plug with a tension wrench. Basicly a much faster version of the pick gun (as seen on TV)....
