What pixel density are we talking about here? What are you planning to display, text, graphic or just light effects? Is the 1.5" x 24" the max dimension of the module or the size of the display area? What thickness are we talking about?

I think this is rather natural.
If you compare the capacitors with two buckets, one full and one empty, you end up with two half full buckets if you 'connect' them. The total amount of water is the same but the volume is twice as big.

Hi Dacflyer, I've checked for cmos versions of the 7407, and there are several types you could have used if you use 5-6V as supply voltage. I seem to remember that you use 9V, and that is too high for these parts. If you could reduce the LED voltage to 5V, ther is no problem to get cmos replacements...
