Re: Starting a project, solar powered night light

To protect the battery I'm thinking of this http://www.linear.com/product/LTC4060 Standalone Linear NiMH/NiCd Fast Battery Charger and for the solar cell http://www.herbach.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=HAR&Product_Code=TM91SED1882&Category_Code=SED Rated 10 VDC open c...

Re: Starting a project, solar powered night light

Here is a place to start, the simple solar yard light upgraded to 3.6V that will turn off at sunrise and on at dusk. Now I need to add battery protection. How about a ziner to stop over charge  or should I use a comparator in the window detection mode??

Re: Reliable breadboard connections

For the bread board use I use the wire I cut off resistors and solder them to the thin wire to push them in to the bread board

Re: Starting a project

Thanks Ringo, when I get to charging I will keep that in mind and when I get to charging I sure could use your help. I now reiterate my previous suggestion. Find out what the objectives are. In other words, what is to be accomplished with the design. In other words, how much light, where, and for ho...

Re: Starting a project

Thanks Hak, I found the LED I had and tested them in a dark room, one LED gives off a little more light than the 4W bulb, but the light beam is focused in a smaller area. Here is the data sheet. http://www.mpja.com/download/15415op.pdf These will be good for the first ones, but a wider viewing angle...

Re: Starting a project

3A seems like A LOT of current for a dozen or two of LEDs! You're right, the luminosity of LED and resistive lamps to current are different (this is good for me) I pulled this off the Internet Yahoo answers "The color and type determines the required voltage. This ranges from 1.8V for a ...

Re: Starting a project

3 amps times 8 hours is 24 amp/hours. That isn't truly realistic though. For example, if you want no less than 30% discharge then you would need a ~72Ah battery. That's for 1 night's use. You've chosen lithium-ion or nickel metal hydride cell technology. A quick look at Digi-Key showed some 12V 3.2...

Re: Starting a project

For starters, with the LED lamps you plan to use, determine the current needed to light them. Lets say 1.2V, 3A (3.2W). To keep that lamp bright for 8 hours you will need a battery with 24Ah, thats a pretty big battery. As for battery chemestry, a LiIon is probably smaller but probably more expensi...

Re: Starting a project

Hmmm... is there something more about this application we should know? You say, "24 hour capacity in case of a cloudy day, no 110v back-up needed." Do you need a nightlight on a cloudy day? You can read the newspaper at 3AM with 12 LEDs. I was thinking this was a hallway/foyer/path to the...

Re: Starting a project

I'd stay right here. OK, so I will stay here to work out the project and then take it to the READERS PROJECT when it is finished. Specs. are in the works. I want this to be durable, long lasting, and trouble free, not a quick easy project. 12 lamps, make each one a individual unit, or 2 one unit, o...

Re: wireless counter

"It is slightly offset from the center line. I had the same idea but check and rechecked and it just doesn't work." Thats OK, a strip of reflective tape on the shaft should do it, now for the transmitter and receiver. How are the laws there you don't want to have some government track you ...

Re: wireless counter

jdboy3020, I am assuming that the compressor is in the top thats rotates, if so than the air line has a coupler that swivels. It's a shame the compressor is not stationary and the shaft comes down to turn the compressor. Is the shaft to the compressor in the center of the head that rotates? if so th...
