SOICs are pretty easy to use and the surfboards (I make my own) are easy to use. I've used 3 different etchants: FeCl, Ammonium Persulfate (AP) and Cupric Chloride (CuCl). I use CuCl becuase I can regenerate it and dont have to dispose it. Double sided PCBs are quite easy to make via toner transfer. I do it all the time (ok,not all the time but I made like 50 in the last year). I don't bother with single sided any more because I like the other side to be a ground plane. You should start with single sided, though. <p>All you need is a ...
