Re: Forget Hydrogen
jwax, your magnet is an energy source in the same sense that gravity is. Gravity is alwaqys there, and it will attract an object to the ground over and over without diminishing. Why don't we tap into this endless source of "energy?"<p>We have to add work to something to put it in a positio...

Re: hakking video game power supplys
If they are switchers, there is no transformer on the AC mains. The AC mains are directly rectified and the resulting high DC voltage is what it runs on. Like LDR said, it might work fine on 120v. In most of the dual voltage switchers I encounter, the switch for 120/240 merely connects the point bet...

Re: Dew Point
If I read him correctly, he wants to measure what the dew point is at any time, not detect when it is reached. IS that it?<p>In other words it is currently 72 degrees and the dew point is 56. He wants to know the DP is 56 while it is still 72.<p>That is more complex than sensing when dew forms.

Re: Do orbiting wires generate?
I don't think any of the conductors in the shuttle are long enough to pick up any substantial current.<p>But the tether experiment was indeed conducted for the purpose of generating current, and it succeeded better than they expected.<p>The reason the wire parted was not from weight. When the cable ...

Re: AM Stereo
Whatever your political stripe, AM radio has largely been taken over by talk programming. SO who cares if it is in stereo? I thought from the start that stereo AM was a solution looking for a problem. it quietly went away. I think satellite radio will be far more likely to hold the consumers interes...

Could real helpful answers be had here? Well, both Gorgon and High Frequency offered to help. Where is the question? I am no stranger to digital myself, and would be happy to offer my thoughts.

Not taking anything away from Digikey either.<p>2200/250v snap ins at $10.46 - parallel them. stock # 5985-380-250v222<p>Another snap in 2200/200v is 140-LS222M2D-3550 for only $7.25<p>And in the com...

Re: Flourescent bulbs
Also, measure the line voltage when this happens. Your hot humid weather is also when draw from the power grid is highest. This will frag the AC line voltage down. You might be suffering from lower line voltage making it harder for the tubes to strike an arc.

Though they dropped the feature, Scientific American for many years had a column called the AMateur Scientist. Not necessarily electronics, thjough electronics was often involved. They covered many scientific experiments. All with the idea of you doing it at home too.

Or add a breaker to the power line to the solenoids. Turn the controls and everything else on first, then flip the breaker on to power the solenoids. That way if there is a spike or other glitch, it can't fire the solenoids because they have no power yet.<p>If you don't want to flip two switches, th...

Not to mention that a laser that powerful would represent a serious vision hazard. All you need is for it to reflect off a shiny bit of solder or other piece of metal and poof you are blind.

If the voltage taps of the heater, and the heater doesn't come on until TOAST is pushed, it can easily be tapped...or not.<p>There is only 2 volts at the power pin of the IC. With respect to what? Only place it matters is the far corner pin.<p>If the voltage across the IC is only 2v, then either som...

Tommy, what you want is a megaphone - a powered megaphone. Also called a bullhorn. 8,000,000 marching band directors can't be wrong.<p>Look up stock number 80-1000 at MCM for an example. It is $90, but it shows what I mean. I gotta believe you can find them used for a lot less.<p> www.mcminone.com <...
