Re: Power factor correcting capicitors?
Power factor is only measured for large commercial/industrial services (therefore, there's no point in correcting it for a residential service). If you are trying to steal power, on the other hand, go somewhere else and ask .
[ July 31, 2002: Message edited by: bobsRAC ]

Re: Mike In to Line in Balance
The divider circuit will match the impedence correctly if the pot's total resistance is equal to the line impedence and the wiper is set to the mic's impedence, but the conversion will disipate the difference as heat. The impedence matching xfmr will transfer the power much more efficiently.
If yo...

Re: Old Nintendo Joystick
If you plan on doing more high-speed logic and less procedural programming, you might look into programmable logic devices (PLD). Lattice Semiconductor for their simple PLDs (SPLD) or complex PLDs (CPLD). I beleive you can get into that area for about $100 as well.
If you are doing one project and...

Re: Old Nintendo Joystick
That depends on what you have access to. If you have access to a microcontroller or programmable logic, the interface would be pretty staightforward. Implementing this with a serial-in-parallel-out (SIPO) shift register is do-able, although I believe it would end up costing more materials, time, and...

And b.t.w. Memsic charges a flat $15 shipping fee within US. You can get a part sampled to you for $15 including shipping, or buy a few for $12 + flat $15 for shipping within US.

Re: Another ROV Question -Tilt
Memsic has thermal accelerometers, offering greater ruggedness and lower cost, with the tradeoff of lower band-width (160ish Hz). For inclinometers, they are rather ideal, because bandwidth is not at all demanding. Their parts are $12 pretty much across the board. They offer 1 and two axis accelero...

The pinout is here . The timing diagram is here . The data is serial, with a strobe line marking the beginning of each transmit sequence. The strobe and clock lines are supplied by the Nintendo box. The data line is a pull-up resistor on the Nintendo side, and an open-collector output on the control...

A few people around my lab used this last semester to drive a small motor. Eventually they traded it out for a home-made circuit.

You can try an inclinometer. They are made specifically for this purpose.

Re: Animatronics
Nitinol might not work in such an application b/c it only provides 3% +- contraction. This can be amplified by wrapping the wire about a strong non-conductive spool, but 30% (the contraction provided by human muscles) seems highish.
If you can figure out a way to do it, I'd be VERY interested in h...

I took the liberty of investigating the cost of building such a motor controller, and found that a circuit meeting your requirements is possible, and relatively simple to construct. It's cost greatly depends on it's intended use.
I designed a bridge rated at 150Vpk, 7.5A continuous at Tamb(max) = ...

Nitinol is worth looking into. It's a shape-memory alloy. I'd look here first for info.
Pneumatic muscle actuators (PMA) are promising for natural muscle-like properties. They have comparable force control, flexibility, and position control, as well as greatly increased power to weight, force to v...
