Re: fluorescent lights in my "COLD" garage

I remember my days of experimenting with electronics back in the days before I was drafted for WWII (yeah, that was a few years ago) and one radio repairman that would talk to me and answer my questions had a flourescent light hung above his work bench in a hardware type store. And it was a tube (bu...

Re: Looking for Serial Port Design for Z80 platform

If you can find a die hard T/S computer user that is into hardware they could help you. T/S = Timex Sinclair and includes the Zx81, T/S 1000 Spectrum, and T/S 2068. There was a modem that ran at 300 baud. The Z80 was a wonderful chip for its time. I used to be in the natioinal users group of those c...

Re: TAB books

Thanks guys! Thermal runaway - yep that refreshed my memory at 77 I do have senior moments. And I never worked with electronics although I worked for an electronics firm. But that was in the role of a mechanical/sheetmetal inspector. You know making chassis and cutting pot shafts to length and in th...

TAB books

Hi, I remember way back when TAB publishing put out a number of books. Back in about 1977 (+ or - a few years) I could get a TAB book from the library on transistors. It was a little different in that it went into detail of what happened if you overpowered a transistor, for instance, without a heats...

Re: automatic transmission

Didn't the Hudson have an automatic shift deal that was vacuum operated. You could do automatically or manually if a remember right. A fellow emplyee had one that he took the automatic feature off because it didn't work right. Guessing that it was a late 1940's to early 1950's model.Possibly late th...

Re: Neodymium Magnets

Do you realize just how powerful a magnet of that size is? I have some small ones and I have had pinched fingers that drew blood. You need to figure out how to handle it before you get one or several. I don't know where you would get one that size. I got mine from Electronic Goldmine. HTH Greybie

Re: Dakota Digital Camera $11

A couple of years ago I bought a digital camera that was a 640 by 480 to play with. Basically outside of resolution it resembled this $11. camera. It worked and connected to a pc. No cards to change if you used up the storage space. But after uploading to the computer you could get the memory erased...

Re: Overhead Door Opener Controller Question

Idon't know the electronics but I do know there is a way for the door opener to detect if there is a child in the path of the door. And that might be the wires you cut. Also there is a way to detect if the door hits something so again might be a wire you cut. Really this is guess and by gosh on my p...

Re: most useful books

If you are looking for a book, especially a used book, try www.half.com. No bidding and prices are what the seller asks and the shipping is quoted so you know what the price is. Shipping is slow at times so might take time.
all you need to know is the book's title or author. Greybie

Questions about vacuum cleaners

Question 1. I use an extension cord on our new vacuum cleaner. I don't know the gauge of the wires but it is one of those yellow three conductor cords. After using it I notice that the cord is about the same temperature (felt by my fingers) as the cord that is the vacuum cleaners cord. I presume tha...

I don't know your electronic expertise but Radio Shack has (or had if no long available) a book titled "Getting started in Electronics' by Forrest M. Mims, III that has information on op amps plus a lot of other solid state chips. There are other books that Radio Shack has that might be worthwh...

Re: Newbie Breadboard question

Hi Sam, To connect your power supply to the breadboard get a jack to fit the plug on the end of the line from the power supply. And get a bag of alligator clips like Radio Shack RS278-1156 ($3.99 in catalog) and cut a black black wire and a red wire and solder the red one to the positive from the po...

Re: Are most people here Electrical/Electronics engineers?

I am 77 years young and while I did take a course in radio repair (NRI) back in 1943 I never kept up with it. I finally got a pc in 1999 and that is one big learning experience after a computer that was in BASIC.<p>And sad to state but Nuts & Volts is the only US magazine devoted to electronics....
