The electric car is inevitable. It is the only appliance left that is not electric. The history is clear. It is an accident of history that cars run on internal combustion engines now. It was good roads, touring, power and the electric starter that geve them the edge. IF the gas car builders had not...

There are neighborhood electric cars limited to 25 mph speed that include a little pickup truck. Google electric cars and they should show up.

By the way, I got an email from Electronic Design that said the Tesla motors car was sold out. I forgot how many were produced.

if there is a power outage you can't get gasoline either. Then you will be glad you have some charge left in your electric car.

Electric cars are wonderfully simple and nice. They are: Battery -> controller -> motor -> wheels. No grease, no oil, no mess. Even when you run out of battery, it is not like running out of gas. You can still get off the road. The problem is the battery does not have much capacity, compared to gaso...

The main thing that killed the electric car, aside from fear, was the charging problem. Drive 40 miles and charge overnight. I have a Prius and I have an electric hand mower. The hand mower is a lot more trouble.
Sometimes I wish it were a hybrid.

You don't buy a hybrid car for milage alone. It is that electric and gas have complementary torque properties. They are smooth, with constant torque at every speed. The miliage is an extra.

If you want real power, you must go electric. All modern trains are electric . Not battery powered of course.
I have a year old Toyota Prius which uses the best qualitiies of gas and electric. Electric for starting torque and gas for cruising power and battery charging. Best car I ever had.

Re: AC Motor Control

I am buying a Toyota Prius. Its electric motors run on 500 volt AC. Its battery pack is 206 volts The electric motor also charges the battery pack when coasting. I thought it was time to go Tesla and learn AC motors. Now we have IGBTs to make inverters, but I don't know how to use them. I don't know...

AC Motor Control

I know how to control DC motors. How is the best way to learn to control AC motors. I am interested in power as in electric cars.
Books, references, any help would be appreciated.

Re: underwater ROV

In the early 60's I worked on a tethered underwater vehicle for the Navy. It was never bought and there are better ones now. This used two cylinders, one above the other with motors on outriggers between. A cable connected all this to the ship. I had fun dragging a garden hose in the Potomac(sp) riv...

You can always add the frequency 15 times which is same as multiplying by 15. Only problem is keeping the result in 8 bits.

Re: Underwater Robotics

Back in 1956 I worked on a vehicle like that for the navy. People are still working with the same concepts. This had a tether with camera and control. It was supposed to destroy mines.
It is an interesting area. I just don't have any handy water right now.

The only problem with underwater robots is that only fish can see them.
