One other suggestion. All Electronics has an assortment of matching
headers and connectors with factory-prepped wire leads.

Re: Electronic Books
I'll second Mims' Getting Started In Electronics and add any and all of his Engineer's Notebook series. These combine theory of operation with oodles of small circuits you can learn and build from. For textbooks, I'd recommend one of the "Electronic Circuits" or "Electronic Devices&qu...

Re: Crimping connector contacts
I'll throw out this idea...
Instead of having the connector at the end of the wire, have you considered putting it in the middle?
Then you could just use something like insulated spade lugs and not worry about precision crimpers or
itty bitty Molex pins.

Re: Mini amp circuit
I gotta give a plug to our host. If you have your N&V back issues, you may want to have a look at Ray Marston's eight-part series 'Bipolar Transistor Cookbook' beginning July 2003, but particularly the October '03 and January '04 installments. It doesn't answer all questions, but does provide lo...

Re: Etchant solution
Where did this idea originate? Not being a trained chemist, I wanted to verify my hunch and found this: "Aluminum reacts analagously to zinc: quite lively with concentrated hydrochloric acid. Copper, on the other hand, is completely unreactive. This can be explained by looking at its position i...

Re: Component ID
I'm reasonably sure they're triacs. RS may be a lot of things, but I've never known them to mislabel their blister packs. These were purchased in the early '90s, so they appear to be contemporary with the VCR boom. A doorbell seems to make more sense though. I guess jwax is right; I have 5 or 6 and ...

Re: When a hard drive gets full...
Yes, "jet the browser cache" is just my slang for getting rid of old web files. Ron has a good plan, but you do have plenty of HD space already; getting the OS onto the 200GB would solve the problem I believe. If you have an XP install disc and current backups... the task is tremendously e...

Re: When a hard drive gets full...
You should have the option in your browser or ftp client or whatever app that allows you to set where your download directory is located. It can be any drive. The same with program execution - the exe file location can be set from the shortcut properties "Target." But you should try to ins...

Yeah, it's probably not the best quarter I ever spent but I'm gonna hang on to them. If they were marked,
I might have a collectors' item! And as Dean said, they have their applications. Who knows? One night I
just might dream one up!

Re: Les Paul passes away at 94
Les Paul is gone, but I've resuscitated this thread because some may be interested in this
recounting of Les Paul's Musical Journey. You can't read it and not come away with an
amazement of what a nuts & volts kind of guy Les was.
And I'm hoping the bold tags help the link text stand out.

Component ID
Some years back, I purchased a pack of unmarked TO-92 triacs from Radio Shack's clearance table. I don't think I can provide the RS part number, but here's the specs that came with: Vdrm = 30V Irms = 0.6A Igt = 0.5A peak gate voltage Vgm = 5V Now the catch (and my question) is I can't seem to find a...

Re: dual operating systems
I haven't had any issues with Vista. Been using it on this computer for a couple of years. One of the first things I did though was turn off all that 3D animation 6u!!sh*t. But I digress... Yes, I'm sure you can make a dual boot system. As far as I know, though, you still need a third-party boot man...

Re: Unknown Disc Usage
I don't print a hard copy of the disc contents, but doing so would be a simple matter. I use that redirect command to make a text file. When I need to find a file I can then use just about any text editor/word processor to search the document for it, and know right where to find it among my backup d...

Re: Unknown Disc Usage
Something I didn't see mentioned... Robert, I take it you are concerned with burning backup files to a blank disc. Virtually all CDR-burner software has the option of creating data or music CDs, so be sure you select the right type. I've burned 100s and 100s of blank discs, both data and music. I fe...
