It's a common voltage for lighting applications in industrial areas.
I'm trying to control lighting and the available voltage is sometimes ONLY 277V.
If I measure the resistor at full load and drop the voltage 37V then at no load there might not be any drop, overloading the 240V transformer.

240V transformer on 277V line?
I think I know the answer to this but I wanted to run it by the smart guys here. I want to power a 240V transformer with a 277V feed. If I use a resistor I guess I'd power the transformer at no load, calculate the current on the primary and select a resistor to drop 37V. Since it's only a 5VA transf...

Well I haven't shopped for the high end stuff but I think you'd save a fortune there if you're building a house. Or if you didn't save money you'd certainly be trading up. But again, it depends on your taste. You will not save on discount crap at directbuy. Research it more on the net, but be carefu...

There's a lot of bitch sites dedicated to trashing DirectBuy but I'm a satisfied member and I'll tell you why. You have to be in the target zone for Directbuy to be useful to you. You need to be buying higher end stuff and you need to be comfortable buying out of a catalogue. Directbuy isn't a disco...

Sorry Externet but you're nuts. Posi's problem is not Chris, it's his own raging ego. He came on this site running into one flame war with Chris after another, unable to control himself. Now, because Chris doesn't leave due to Positronicle's brilliant arguments, P himself has to leave because he did...

Mr.Al I think you're doing a fine job. philba You have to be very careful about any attempt to censure posts. Kicking people off and threatening them is a sure fire way to boredom. Also, when you kick up the dust you often see aspects of things you never thought possible. Are you SURE you want to sh...

You're in the wrong place kheston. Go to homepower.com. If you're serious get a year's worth of back issues(they have good deals on that) and bone up on all the options. Every week there's a spotlight on some system much like what you're looking into. I think your cheapest, most reliable option will...

(Here's my best Chris impression for a reply) An experience engineer like myself will tell all the amateurs here it's better to face the music than charge a shorted capacitor with bad harmonics. Ballasts are like a boat without stabilizer bars, lose one ballast and the boat rocks like a seagul on a ...

Ballast "performance" question
I have been asked if I could evaluate the "performance" of a ballast. I advised the customer to try and find someone else since I know nothing of the performance of a ballast. But, of course, now I'm curious..................... The customer mentioned "Ballasts have many performance i...

Here's my take on what should be banned............. The flaming is just a matter of self control between the writers who write nonsense and the readers who don't have to react. How about banning people who present themselves as experienced engineers and advise novices to wire high voltage devices i...

Heat transfer question
I don't know much about heat transfer dynamics so I'm curious of a simple problem. If I have a "hot" component in a metal case, on a board, with, or without, a heatsink is there more or less heat transfer or dissipation if the component is near the case? That is, if a hot component is moun...

OK! Next question......... I'd research this more myself but I think the questions I'm asking and the answers I'm getting are a benefit to this forum........ I 'scoped the circuit and it seems to be working ok but I'm not sure of acceptable input parameters. Driving the circuit at about double expec...

MrAl, the application calls for possible continuous operation with a 3 year warranty. That's why I'm being so careful and overdesigning the specs. The microprocessor will shut off the fan when not in use, but continuous use is a possibility. I'm using a BE2G Hammond transformer. Also, with some test...
