Rare Earth Neodymium Magnets

This is a new toy like thing. I saw these listed by Electronic Goldmine and since every course in DC electronics always gets into magnetism I thought I would get some powerful magnetics and play with them.
Bet the folks at Electronic Goldmine are laughing at those that buy the magnets. They are po...

Re: Hello! Newbie to electronics

Thanks Greg for posting the web site. I have went there and it is what I have been looking for. Now that Poptronics is past history there is only Nuts and Volts. And I have seen so many go by the wayside. Greybie

Or you might be able to use a baby monitor. I suppose they could operate off of batteries. Might be able to get one at a Goodwill or somesuch place. Greybie

Re: is there a tree of knowldege for the woefully ignorant s

Hi Steven, Way back in the 1930's I started to learn about electricity and at that time the going thing was radio. I started with a #6 dry cell (like an oversized D battery with screw terminals), some crate banding straps, some bell wire, nails and pieces of wood to mount stuff on. No meter or solde...

Re: lost with a new toy

If that was like some I have assembled it has taper springs to put into holes. And yes it is frustrating to assemble the componets on the bottom side. Seems like I used ofset needle nosed pliers to do it. It does get complicated to put the third and fourth componet onto the bottom. Of course with yo...

Re: New Nuts & Volts Format

Hi Gang, I hadn't checked this out till now. My copy of N&V came today and I didn't look closely at it till I started to read it. I thought it was Poptronics last issue. Great change and I like it.
Dean, I will be sending a starter check to get the new mag started. I sort of expected it to die...

Re: Electronic Design For Dummies

Before I retired in 1987 I used to wok occasionally with EE engineers. I had to sort of read their minds.
I can visualize what you need, sort of. You will need an emiiter LED, probably infrared, and the sender will need to have the light sent down a tube to keep it from interacting with the other ...

Re: Electronic Design For Dummies

I am also not too knowledgeable in the field of electronics but I think I see what you want to do. You want to know how the object passes a certain spot, that is if it is centered in the path and also if it is traveling parallel to the path or if the object is turned at an angle to the path. If you ...

Re: How to switch 400V from camera strobe circuit

I posted back in the topic "High Intensity Light Weight Strobe Unit" two sources of information on how to hack the disposable strobe unit. Be advised that the capacitors can hold a charge for a very long time. I was holding one in my hand as I was tinkering with it and got a jolt. As far a...

Re: Hacking old 51/4" floppy drive servo (spindle) moto

I have tweaked the Tandon TM-100-2A and 1A floppie drives to get the speed ust below 300 RPM which is the best speed for the obsolete T/S 2068 computer equiped with vender disk interfaces.
The pot is located on the rear of the drive and if you look straight down from the top the adjustment screw f...

Re: High Intensity light weight strobe unit

I don't know just what you are looking for but a once use camera with flash comes with a working strobe of flash unit. If yo uare lucky you can get one or more at some of the one hour photofinishers. Be easy to strip off the camera part and rig a way to flash it as a strobe. If the frequency of the ...

Re: Spark Generator

I hope that you aren't thinking of a spark gape transmitter. If so the entire neighborhood will ride you ouit of town on a rail after a tar and feathering party. I remember reading of such a transmitter in a book published in the early 1900 prehaps 1912. It would broadcast on all wavelengths from lo...

Re: Basic Inductor Question

Hi, I am not a guru and I can't explain it furthur but if a capacitor it charged and removed from a circuit it still holds the charge. But if you take an inductor out of the circuit there is no voltage or current in it.
When I took a course in 1943 in radio repair they referred to the capacitors ...
