The best thing I can suggest is http://opencores.org/projects although you probably already know about that wonderful little place
Hope it helps,

They have a boatload of microcontroller solutions. I have used several of their ethernet devices for experimentation. They have a fairly nice protocol stack that is pretty easy to customize - and free.
Hope it helps,
Kevin

Re: PS3
I have never hooked up a system to the internet but that error message may mean that you do not have DHCP enabled in your router. When a device tries to connect to the router, it has to get an IP address from somewhere. Try ensuring that DHCP is turned on in your router.

Re: Microcontroller usage stats
I have the speech pretty much done. What I am having a hard time finding are the sales numbers for uC's. In number of units sold instead of a dollar figure. The newest stats I could find were from either 2002 or 2006...

Re: Microcontroller usage stats
Well, it is only a 4-6 minute speech. It is for my speech class so it can't be too technical, either. Just the basics of what it is, where they are used, etc. And, it has to be done using an outline. If you write it out word-for-word, you will get an F on it (the teacher has warned us over and over ...

Microcontroller usage stats
I have to give an informative speech in class. I chose the topic of Microcontrollers (What they are, where they are used, etc). I have searched for references on the number of microcontrollers sold (not in dollars, but units). The best I have found is data from 2002 or something like that (maybe it ...

Re: Using webcams as security cameras
In theory I think it could work. A microcontroller with a usb port and a driver for the webcam connected to a wi-fi module of some sort (http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9290, for example). Now, the question is, do you want to invest the time and money to try it. Each ca...

Re: computer to computer USB connection
I would swear I saw one of these a couple years ago. I was right... See: http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Computer-to-Computer-USB-Networking-Cable/534074/product.html I used the google search: http://www.google.com/search?q=usb+link+%22computer+to+computer%22&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&...

Re: [OT] Career advice
Well I have changed my plans to get a BSCIT degree. The associate courses will be at Ivy Tech community college and the rest at Purdue. Some of you mentioned the Geek Squad. I applied for a position there but I won't do sales. If sales is involved, I will reject any job offer. I guess I am too hones...

Re: [OT] Career advice
I am hearing just about what I thought I would hear. I am almost 42, btw. I will have to make sure that all of the classes I take will transfer into a 4 year college (most likely, Purdue).
Thanks for all the replies!

[OT] Career advice
I have just started school for IT - even though I have been working with computers for 25+ years - mostly not getting paid for it. My original idea was to get an associates degree and get an IT job at a hospital (or another company with an in-house IT department). In doing some job market research, ...

Re: Temperature reader from different rooms.
For just an IC, I stumbled across this:

It looks interesting and I would love to check it out but tomorrow is my 1st day of college (at 40+ years old) so I think I will be busy for a while....

Re: Temperature reader from different rooms.
They are not wireless out of the box. They are in a TO-92 package, IIRC. There are a bunch of wireless modules of various types out there though. Microchip has some, sparkfun has some and I am sure a slew of other places. They seem expensive to me for just tinkering but if I had a specific project w...
