Re: Collector vs Emitter
Putting the load in the collector leg of the circuit will not require the base driver to go rail to rail, but the emitter leg will. This can (but not necessarily will) improve switching time.

Re: Good deal on 680k Resistors??
I figure I'm better off trading than selling. Less stress that way. I'm still holding on to some metal film resistors and some other stuff. It's a shame to hear about those transistors down the drain. If there's any interest in some NOS current transformers, maybe I'll rescue some before all seven h...

Re: capacitor types
Beyond audiophile and into audiovore... What about the wire? Don't you want to compensate for the "red" sound of copper? Especially if there is _ANY_ oxygen in it which gives it a "burnt" sound. Having the wrong strand diameter can make it "sinewy". Too exotic a speaker...

Re: Drilling out PCBs
I've done very few double sided boards. Disclaimer now given, I suggest laying out the top traces first and painting the bottom, then etching. Once side one is etched, use the dimples in the pads to start your drill bit, good alignment that way. Then strip the paint off the back, paint the top, lay ...

Re: Salvaged stale components
Fresh catch! One reel (5000) 10.0k 1% 1/4W. I think they're flameproof, they're blue. They got tossed because the manufacturer was unidentifiable.

Another item! I now have over a pound (I haven't counted them) of 22k 5% 5W resistors. My eaddress is available in profiles.

Re: Digital Dash?
You can get an old '286 or '386 for somewhere between dirt cheap and free. Run an LCD module on the parallel port. The software can boot from a minimal hard drive. You might even be able to run two displays on the same port. I'm not sure, but I think I saw something about one of the nine pin port li...

Re: etching printed circuit boards
How small? I could justify putting something small in my next batch, if it's not too esoteric. It won't look as good as PCBExpress, but it'll be a lot cheaper.

Re: A little design help...
Good point Edd. I'm testing one right now to see if it can withstand that much ripple for a few hours. I set the variac at 20V to get the same speed.<p>I've opened up fans of tow different voltage ratings and found they have the same propietary chip. There are some rated for 48V, but I haven't looke...

Salvaged stale components
More stuff, 'cept this is new. A reel of 10.0k 0.1% 0.5W resistors were pitched a few weeks ago. They're small enough that I could send a few in an envelope to anybody (US and Canada)who wants some. I also rescued a bag of 16MHz crystals, they were intended for surface mount but the pins can be stra...

Sure I can. I've two .pdf files on my hard drive. I don't remember where I got them (maybe here), but If you send me an e-mail I'll attach them to my reply (if I have your ema, it isn't attached to your alias).

Re: etching printed circuit boards
Try http://www.fullnet.com/u/tomg/gooteepc.htm . For my non-critical stuff with wide traces, I use paper. For dense or complicated items, I'll use Press'n'Peel blue. I get fair results either way, some minor touch-up may be needed before etching. You'll probably want to find another source for your ...

Dacflyer,<p><chuckle> Is there a return address on the package? Seriously though, for some of the same reasons you don't want your e-mail address readily available on the web, I don't feel comfortable posting my s-mail address here. You could send me an e-mail and I'd respond with it though, if you'...

Re: A little design help...
MrAl:<p>Yes, I do have a bunch of 12V fans, at least two dozen. All identical and tested. I salvaged them from equipment that was marked for obsolescence. They're rated to run on 20% overvoltage continuously, I've tested them for 40%, and I believe they can withstand up to 30V as they have the same ...

I saw a mortality clock in an All Electronics catalog. You can try www.allelectronics.com to see if they've still got it
