Re: is everyone on vacation ?? no activity here since the 19

I think the inactivity is why we're seeing a lot of old posts being drug up from the distant past.

Re: is everyone on vacation ?? no activity here since the 19

Hey, hey!! Let's not be killing off the "Q & A" column. I don't want Russ Kincaid as an enemy! Us "Q & A" writers have to stick together, for you never know when you'll be out of a job.

Re: is everyone on vacation ?? no activity here since the 19

All six of us are here. What's the problem? I don't understand why this forum is little-used considering that it has the backing and subject input of the magazine. Maybe not enough folks are using the forum for their article questions. With the forum running, one wonders what's the point of Reader-t...

Re: The "Great' lawnmower legal settlement

King of Torts by John Grisham is a pretty good inside look at class-action suits. Down here in SE Missouri, a gal having a baby had been on all sorts of drugs, got punched and knocked off her front porch by her boyfriend and sued the hospital and OB doc a few years later because the kid tested a li...

Re: ultrasonic cleaners

Hmmmm. Another ancient post has been resurrected.

The teletype shops at the Naval Stations where I served had huge ultrasonic tanks that they loaded up with about 10 gallons of solvent for cleaning TTY printers. A heck of a lot of oiling was required after that cleaning!

Re: Flipping video

Oops! Dacflyer's post was a LOT earlier than mine, but wasn't posted on the board when I made this reply. So, there's some unintended duplication here. Sorry. the original reply: The trick is to reverse the horizontal scan. Anything you put between camera and monitor will effect everything -- e.g., ...

Re: PCB Layout Software

At the bottom of the heap is a program called "PCBoards", I think out of Alabama somewhere. It's the only one I've ever used and I've always liked it. Fully manual. No autorouter. No schematic capture. You plan the board. You know or find the pinouts. You draw the board manually. But I loa...

Re: Inductors for Receiver

My gosh, no wonder the inductor has to be so big, with only 10pF in parallel! The "old" BCB receivers of yore used a 365pF variable.

Re: Tube Data

Check out the appendix of older Radio Amateur's Handbooks(ARRL), maybe between 1960 and 1980 editions, as they had CRT data for easily-available, popular CRTs of the time.

Re: Air/Steam Engine Conversion

After viewing "the real things" at gas and steam engine shows (and especially the UP "Big Boy" steam engine where there's one on display at the railroad museum in Green Bay WI), it's just hard to not rather have all the mechanical valves and linkages. Thing is, an EMP will render...

Re: Wire coating?

Actually, I believe the term "magnet wire" refers not to the method of insulating, but to the fact that the wire is soft copper and will remain pretty much bent to shape when winding a coil rather than trying to play "spring" with you. The insulation for "varnish coated"...

Re: Alternating Switch

If the 120 vac is supplied to the barn and the wire running from barn to house is only to the switch, it shouldn't be difficult. On the other hand, if the 120 vac is being supplied at the house and switched to the barn, the only time you'll have power to the barn (and hence to any control circuitry)...

Re: Underwater compass...

Considering that our nuke subs do the bulk of their navigation in the audo range using passive sonar (or active sonar in emergencies), one wojuld think that audio is going to be the only way. As far as RF goes, the U.S. Navy uses ELF transmissions as notification for subs to near-surface for high sp...

Whenever I look back over my 50+ years of electronics mags (yeah, I've saved every one I've ever received), I find all sorts of notes I've writen (even inserted sheets of paper with drawings) on projects I've built or intended to build. As much trouble as I've always had in obtaining, storing, trans...

Re: Electrostatic problems

What the heck are you doing sliding the thing around on carpet?!!? Haven't you ever been zapped by a doorknob? I'm surprised that you haven't zapped chips other than the fact that they're connected together and to power. Try powering the thing on a sheet of anti-static plastic (pink poly or some suc...
