Re: Calling all old timers....
Hey, Len, just because I started drawing my Medicare and despise anything that even smacks of "processor" or "software" is no reason to make cracks about old timers. Watch yourself, sonny!

Re: 4 PIN DIP SOCKET
Do they still make Molex Soldercons? You can make custom sockets with those. Unless you're in a manufacturing mode, cutting down an 8-pin socket seems most prudent to me. And it would be perfect if you needed to socket 2 isolators. Or you can start using isolators in larger packages so that you have...

Re: need suggestions - GPS clock
I've always wondered if it's possible to derive a signal from an old Garmin, Tom-Tom, Magellan, whatever GPS from a car. I nearly killed my son-in-law when I found out he had bought a new one to replace the old one with an intermittent display and threw the old one in the trash. There's enough of th...

Re: Unexpected finding in soldering...
My tool box is miles away from here right now so I can't lay my hands on it, but I believe it's Multicore that makes a product just for what you need. It comes in a small, quarter-sized tin and is essentially powered solder and flux in a hard paste. You dip your hot iron tip into it and it comes out...

Re: Going Digital
Although I have no interest in the PC mags, when I go back through all my old Popular Electronics, Radio-Electronics and their offspring, I'm amazed (well, not really) at all the notes I've made on schematics and parts lists of interest. Can't to that with digital. When I was with Tektronix, the com...

Wayne Green has passed away

An active participant in ham radio and computers, I remember him for his multipage editorial rants and his attempt to keep the electronics construction aspect in the microcomputer craze of the 1970s and 1980s with Kilobaud magazine. He was a good guy.

Re: Popular Electronics Magazine
I think that Larry Steckler holds all the copyrights to Popular Electronics, Radio-Electronics, Electronics Now, Computers & Electronics, Poptronics and Hands-On Electronics . Gernsback Publishing (which Larry owns) either started some of these, revived dead titles or bought the magazine from an...

Re: Enviromentalist Revenge Trap
Asbestos-sheathed wire? Why? You're not hooking up a waffle iron or toaster heating element. If you're looking for good electrical insulation, use silicone-covered high voltage test lead wire. Sounds like you've found what' called "hardware cloth" -- galvanized steel "screen" tha...

Re: Help finding a bushing, please...
That last post should hit the spot. All the others were researching true bushings and the OP was looking at a coaxial cable feedthru. It's the companies like MCM Electronics and Dalbani that'll have them along with all the other cable TV accessories you'll ever need. Even the dreaded RS may have them.

Re: motion sensor security lights
Generally, the lens portion is to determine where the detection will be the greatest so that a cat or dog will not trip it but a human will. I'll bet that a new light will be nearly as cheap as a replacement lens which may not be available anyway. Lighting products tend to have a very short "li...

OK. All of the 1970's and 1980's have been indexed, at least until the (first) death of Popular Electronics. Man, that was depressing, for as I got into the 1980s, there was such a heavy emphasis on computers that finally they changed the name of the mag to Computers and Electronics, finally making ...

Re: Would you have this cutters for sale ?
I cannot envision ANY flush cutter being rated for piano wire. Generally speaking, they're for soft copper only -- use a semi-flush for the center conductor of RG-59. I absolutely LOVE flush cutters. The brand I use all the time is Diamalloy. They're better (when new and fresh) than anything for cut...

Re: What type of sensor this probe uses ?
Trouble with thermistors is that they tend to melt down at higher temps such as "grilling" temps. These days, temp sensors tend to be thermocouples for really extreme temps in industry; RTDs or transistors are used more with us common folk; thermistors for temps that we can bodily stand fo...

Re: High Voltage Circuit
OK. I've been indexing my collection of PE's and decided, because of the original request, to being with January 1970. So far, I've indexed through September 1975 and still no high voltage circuit as described. I'm not done yet. In fact, it's been one of my goals to index ALL of my magazines, and th...
