Re: Need Appliance Service PDF or Something Similar

Thank you Miguel. The upper sliding shelf (it's really a big tray) has an ice bin that lifts out easily. However, the shelf cannot be tilted up and out. There is a center tongue & groove rail. The shelf slides on that rail. The only was to slide that shelf off the rail is to remove the entire fr...

Need Appliance Service PDF or Something Similar

Guys, I know this is not really a subject for Nuts & Volts. I've posted on two appliance repair forums with no replies. These forums have dozens of service technicians as members. I should have been swamped with replies. 16 months ago my sister purchased a new refrigerator. After a few weeks the...

Re: A Slightly Uncommon Monitor Cleaning Problem

I just returned to this forum and I started to read the first sentence of my post. Yikes! I omitted the word "you" when I typed "Do remember the original recipe for cleaning LCD monitors?" It's kind of embarassing to mess up the first sentence in a post! Maybe I should retire my ...

A Slightly Uncommon Monitor Cleaning Problem

Do you remember the original recipe for cleaning LCD monitors? I subscribed to PC Magazine and P C World for decades. Both magazines suggested a 1:1 mixture of distilled water and white vinegar. Countless websites still recommend this recipe for cleaning monitors. Years ago I switched to a Bausch &a...

Re: Save My Desktop - If You Can!

When you finish building a desktop, there are usually unused SATA ports on the motherboard. I tried the optical drive cable in each unused port. The BIOS always listed the port number correctly during bootup, but it didn't fix the problem with XP. I started opening some boxes in my workshop with old...

Re: Save My Desktop - If You Can!

Janitor Tzap, are you trying to say the procedure I followed was not enough? You mentioned completely removing the mobo and shorting all the electrolytics with a 470K resistor. Before I disconnect everything and pull the mobo from the tower I must know the odds of success. Is there at least a 50/50 ...

Re: Save My Desktop - If You Can!

TRIED THE SIMPLE FIX FIRST This is the command to unregister a file: regsvr32 -u <path>\<filename> The document from the Sophos Community says this: "As a workaround to a problem you may need to register, or unregister, a .DLL (or other) file." Notice the words "or other file." ...

Re: Save My Desktop - If You Can!

Janitor Tzap, that's a really great idea!! I immediately removed the side panel from the tower. I can see the CMOS jumper pins. They are called CLR_CMOS. There is another way to reset the CMOS. Pull the battery and connect a jumper wire to the negative and positive battery terminals. Most mobo user...

Re: Save My Desktop - If You Can!

haklesup, please read my original message. The Pioneer burner is most definitely listed during POST. It's also listed in the Boot Menu and in the BIOS (or CMOS) setup. I just loaded a BartPE boot disk from the Boot Menu. Obviously, the burner is fine. gunter, I tried EVERY SYSTEM and REGISTRY HACK! ...

Re: Save My Desktop - If You Can!

Janitor Tzap, the operating system I'm using right now doesn't exist! I can download and upload files which are scanned by dozens of virus and malware detectors in the cloud, or by several of my own apps. The system I use at home when I'm online is mounted as a virtual image. I go offline and the im...

Save My Desktop - If You Can!

With powerful laptops and AIO (All-In-One) computers the traditional tower style desktop is fading. I've built many desktops over the years, and I'm thinking about going in that direction too. I still have a really nice desktop in my home office and I've got a serious problem! After replacing the CM...

Brave Browser - July Nuts & Volts

There are countless blogs and forums asking "what's your favorite browser?" I'd like to magically replace all ten billion replies with my own. The answer is "well, maybe, sort of, I guess, I think," and on and on into oblivion. I use K-Meleon most of the time. It does load web pa...

Re: Fluorescent Dimmer - It's OK?

That is an option Steve G, but once I remove the fixture it's going to be replaced, not rewired. The idea is to find a simple solution that works. Modern fluorescent dimmers may be very good, but I have never used one. I guess my brain is stuck in the past. If I remember correctly, the early attempt...

Fluorescent Dimmer - It's OK?

I have a huge collection of electronics books and old factory data books. I know everything is online, but it's too painful to throw them in the trash. Long before ultra miniature SMD's there were published designs for fluorescent dimmer switches. I never tried to breadboard any of these schematics....

Re: Modem Trouble

I googled "dial-up modem if you would like to make a call, please hang up and try again." The list of possible causes are almost endless. I don't know why, but I've never had a problem with a dial-up modem that required more than 10 minutes to resolve. Just good luck, I guess. Like I said,...
