Re: 4n35 collector wired to TIP31c base?
There may have been some "behind-the-scenes" current-limiting going on. The 4N35 may be unable to provide sufficient drive to the TIP31 so the transistor was dissipating more than its share of power. I second Bob's advice: check the motor specs to find what you need from the TIP31s. Divide...

Re: HEP-722 available equivalent
Yes, from my look-see the 2N3904 and her relatives didn't appear to have enough gain. And as dyarker noted also, a Darlington configuration is probably overboard, given with the low-power signals the circuit operates at. MrAl mentioned a 2N3866 and that might do the job, though it might not. That's ...

Re: HEP-722 available equivalent
My NTE book shows a direct cross from HEP722 to NTE108. A quick Google search brought me to Newark's web page for a Fairchild 2N5770 , with the following specs: # RF TRANSISTOR, NPN, 15V, TO-92 # Transistor Polarity:NPN # Collector Emitter Voltage, V(br)ceo:15V # Power Dissipation, Pd:350mW # DC Col...

The writeup could've probably been better. I don't know what the author had been listening
to, but "funk" and "twang" don't really seem to go together.

Re: non-conductive gel
Any chance of expanding on this project a bit, drHathaway? It sounds to me to be more involved than taillights. If I'm not mistaken, pure water is nonconductive. But perhaps you need more damping ability for a nonstationary device? More than mineral oil can provide? Why not an epoxy? Somewhere here ...

Re: disgusted with digital !
Thanks for the clarification. Yes, the DIP socket trick might work. They tend to just have ribs connecting the rows, not a solid platform, so that's something to consider. The article I referred to used solder-pad breadboard to make a neat little package. The article was in Elektor, which began dist...

Re: disgusted with digital !
It is difficult even keeping up with new packaging nomenclature, but I admit I'm not sure what "1/2 scale" and "1/4 scale" are. Is that equal to SOIC and mini-SOIC? I've reached the age where I need those drugstore glasses just to read :-( I'm sure I gotta step it up for SMT work...

Re: disgusted with digital !
Yeah, Weekend Workbench with Andy Anode... or something like that. Back when N&V was in the large format. On a related note, though beyond analog vs digital and perhaps deserving of its own thread, I'm curious how this group deals/is dealing with the creep toward SMT. Many hobbyist types can't a...

Re: Autoranging Panel Meter
Someone may sell an autoranging module, but I can't recall seeing any. You could go the DMM route with an isolation circuit; eg the ICL7660 or switched capacitor apps that can be found online. As another idea to go along with, you could wire the meter to provide an output current measurement, too, w...

The programmer wasn't made by Jameco. Have you opened it up to see if there's some clue to the manufacturer?
Maybe a silkscreen on the PCB, a custom chip, firmware ID, ... Anything that might help direct a search for docs?

Re: ArcSoft Total Media Backup
You should double-check, but from what I gather the *.nbz file is a proprietary compressed file, zipped up to protect the backups from deletion or malware attack. As such, they're safe to move to external storage. And I don't what the files contain, but you may only need to save the newest file of t...

Re: No Ethernet or Network Connection
Explain it step by step? No, I'm not at my Win98 pc so I probably can't. 1) First thing to do is make sure the file is in the root directory of the flash drive. So plug it into the Win98 computer and use Windows Explorer to make sure it's there. If it's not in the root directory, move it there. 2) N...

'Twas I. That's exactly the thumb drive I was trying to get to work with my Win98SE. No go.
U3 is actually different hardware. I don't think it will ever work with Win98SE.
