Re: Appreciation for Ma Bell

I do appreciate the 'Old Ma Bell' but certrainly not the new ofsprings. I am in a rural area, with a old pulp wire service from the C/O that was installed in the 50's. Nope, no plans for any upgrade, DSL is not available because of the distance and line conditions, hum and low audio are common conve...

Self adhesive hook & loop (Velcro) tape is sometimes a life saver! It can be used for mounting many things. A thin strip is easily cut from the wider tape. As for the plastic curring, I use a fine blade, like a plywood blade and a wax stick lubricatant on a table saw. Don't go too slow or the bl...

Bob, Years ago the old B/W CRT's used a tube base, like an octal base, with hollow soldered pins. From the heat, the filament pin connection often failed. Somebody, GC I think, made a pin crimper that punctured a slot in the pin sidewall to crimp a loose connection. The same tool would also crimp th...

We got one years ago with the neck broken completely off, but artfully taped in place with plastic tape. The owner said "It just went out while we were watching the news"... An old, and frugal neighbor with a vintage set had an intermittent filament inside the CRT. Nope he didn't repair it...

How about a pulsed IR light code, with a receiver to detect it? A pic project for sure!

Years ago we used to use a reed switch as the vehicle arm/disarm switch. It was mounted behind the tail light reflector and a keychain magnet operated it. Really conveinent for rear door access to work vans!

A few weeks ago I parked leaving the lights on my truck on. A few hours later, I wasn't surprised to find that the battery would barely turn the engine. No jumper box available, I used a 18V cordless drill battery and two clip leads to top off the battery. After 10 minutes or so the engine started. ...

Robert,
Thanks for that info, It does make sense.

The lumber business is indeed unique, selling 2x4's that are smaller, sheet goods that are larger and penny sized nails that cost dollars...the list goes on.

Al, Quality bolts for the most part have their threads made by cutting, on a screw machine while cheaper bolts are often made using rolled threads. There are differences in quality and finish. Use a microscope or high power lens and look at the thread. It may be obvious if they are rolled. I have ha...

Here's another thought, I do tech support for a large bindery and they use lots of hot glue for binding. It has different melting and clarity properties than the craft store glue sticks, comes as small beads or shapes and melts easily so it can be poured. Maybe a local bindery shop would part with, ...

This is the last call! I've posted before hoping to find a home for this gear and it looks dim. More thoughts about the 'Digital transition' Did you realize that these coupons are being sent 3rd class mail? There are thousands of people, that went or are on vacation, that will never get their requested coupons. The USPS does not forward 3rd class mail. Where are all these coupons, better not a...

As another thought, if the heater has a blower/fan why not rewire it so it runs continuously? The air sample will be more accurate. I have a small heat pump in a sunroom addition and the temperature sensing is via the return air. It works well since the fan actually slows down when the compressor go...
