In the digital world, the choice between BJT and
FET is a choice between speed and powe (heat).
BJT's switch much much faster than FET's, but
require much more power.
FET's are on the other side of the scale, taking
little current to switch but quite a bit longer
to turn on/off.

Re: Collector vs Emitter
Puting the load off the collector simplifies
the base current calcultions.
They are also amplifying different quantities.
common collector amplifies voltage whereas
common emitter amplifies current.

Re: light sensitive resistor detector circuit
How about forgetting about testing for the presence of light?
When the bulb goes out, the filiment breaks, correct? I can't think of a failsafe circuit off the top of my head, but I would think you could just sample the voltage accross the bulb.
When the voltage is low, the bulb is good. When g...

Re: Universal programmer recommendations?
I can't recomend a good one, but I can steer you away from what we use.
All-in-1 - universal WS_app - universal
those are the names of the programmers we use. They do everything we need the to do, so they haven't been replaced. However they are slow, slow, slow... 512k eeprom takes about 15min t...

Re: as long as we are talking diodes/dead car tape deck
I can think of 3 ways off the top of my head:
1. My DMM has a diode tester on it, just pop it in.
2. Use the continuity function on your DMM, It should beep from cathod to anode, and give a high impedance from anode to cathod.
3. Pull the diode out of the circuit and make a simple R - Diode ci...

Re: op-amp circuit with gain of 100
gain is simply vout/vin or Iout/Iin :)
But with op amps, there are two ways to do it. There is the difficult theoretical way, and the easy empirical way.
*** warning, the below is from a rusty memory ***
Theoretical, if I remember correctly, you can do a nodal analysis using the equvilent mod...

I though tunnel diodes were similar to zenors. plus, how do you get amplification from a 2 lead device?

Re: Electronics Thesis
Just an idea for a project I never finished was building an auto-driving laptop. It was for a club in college and we were making it demo to high-school kids to get them excited about engineering. Too bad I graduated before finishing.
** The Project **
We took an old 486 laptop with windows 95 OS...

Ok, ok... we've reached full circle.
I'm sorry, but you've shown me nothing but your own opinions. Re: Caps
electricity is passing electrons from one atom to another. That is current.
Electrons orbiting the same nucleous is a stable stable system, the force between proton and electron keep them together in an electric field.
An applied external voltage overcomes this stability and gets the electrons ...

hehe.. I've been reading this and cant resist...
If there are electrons, then you get an electric flux, and hence a magnetic field... Then one could resonably concieve that a charged capacitor pulled from it's circuit would behave like a magnet. And furthermore, a battery would have similar proper...
