Re: Joke thread?
Two businessmen sitting on a beach in Florida strike up a conversation.
"Yeah," says the first one, "I retired after a fire destroyed my factory. I collected the insurance and here I am."
"That's a coincidence," says the second one. "Same thing happened to me. ...

Re: variance euqation?
In the right hand term in the TOP equation shown in the
http://user52.starbeta.org/others/question.doc
link, you are taking the sum of the indexed values from i= 1 to i = n, and then dividing by n to get the average value of x. This would be proper.
In the right hand term in the BOTTOM equat...

Re: since somone had a ultrasonic question....
Same effect as with ultrasonic room humidifiers. I've often wondered if the "dusting effect" is due more to collection and settling of dust particles on the water droplets in the air rather than solute load in the supplied water. Anyone know?

Re: Circuit protection device ??
Try checking the Clixon company. Their name is almost synomymous with "circuit breaker," like Kleenex is to tissues.
The make a load of overload (thermal and electrical) protection devices as for example, motor reset buttons on your garbage disposal, overload switches on your 'fridge and...

Re: How About an Ultrasonic Pill Splitter?
The shock advocates seem to have the right idea. I've found that merely pushing the manual pill cutter blade down tends to crush, while a sharp rap tends to split the pill evenly. Centering the pill in the little v-groove is important, also. Not 100% perfect, but a sharp rap sure beats just pushing ...

Re: hot surface ignitor
Don't experiment with furnaces unless you live next to a fire house.
Since we know these ignitors are fairly standard devices, but are fragile and consumable, the solution is to buy proper spares in advance.
The heating circuitry is designed for the silicon carbide. You could probably jury-rig s...

Re: appliance without batteries
Pardon my ignorance, but how come the word-wrap on this topic is about two of my screens wide?
Any suggestions to cure this?
A UBB or HTML tag to change the whole topic on my screen?
I don't want to sidetrack this interesting topic, but if someone can help in one post, it would be nice.

Re: Cooling fan thermostat
'Cause he happened to mention 24 VAC transformers.
Not exactly a design parameter, but that's what lh mentioned.
There dozens of ways to do it, of course. Designing from the function to the hardware is one thing, but most of the time these home projects end up being designed from parts availab...

Re: radio controlled relay
OK. I just didn't think IR would do it that far in adverse atmospheres with reasonable powers. Hm...
...and speaking of power:
http://205.243.100.155/frames/longarc.htm#Disconnect
This link might scare some people who only deal with TTL levels. ;)
Make sure your sound is on.

But re laser: ...rain? ...snow? ...fog? ...sleet?
My brain "kited off" on this one and I thought of a dog whistle with a sharp op-amp active filter tuned to the whistle f on the receiving end.
Actually, radio seems best bet. Hint: If you want to buy a pre-packaged one or a madule from...

FROM:
http://www.alpinehomeair.com/viewcategory-10.htm
"Furnace ignitors are found on most modern furnaces to light the gas flames upon unit start-up. Electricity passes through the Silicon Carbide ignitor and makes it glow red hot. Operating under normal conditions for 3 - 5 years, ignit...
