Re: GFCI question
It's an older home with plastic (phenolic I think) boxes and 2 conductor wire with braided insulation. no conduit in site.
An un-executed plan I have would wire the ground conductors under the house ( a completely different route than the wires which go through the attic and walls) daisy chained t...

GFCI question
In a room where the plugs have two prongs and no ground is it acceptable to replace those sockets with GFCI (which have a ground prong) even if it will be connected to a 2 wire circuit with no ground. (the instruction pamphlet is confusing about this specific application but seems to indicate it is ...

Re: varistor question
Mount the resistors further away from the PCB and use a higher wattage. This should prevent damage to the PCB if they blow again.
BTW, What is a "Wax motor" and what does it do in a washer.
[ September 01, 2004: Message edited by: haklesup ]

Re: varistor question
A varistor will protect the circuit from voltage surges. If you think that is what caused the motor to fail, then it makes sense.
But... if you are trying to just protect the PCB if the motor shorts then a fuse in series with the motor or supply to the board (assuming it controls the motor directl...

Re: gear counter
how about a 4 bit up down counter connected to a 7 seg decoder (or a 4 to 16 line decoder). The shifter pedal would need two switches that would put the up/down pin at the correct logic level and pulse the clock pin.
There are several U/D counter chips in the 74xx and 40xx series with different fe...

Re: Inverter transformer
Chances are, if it is for automotive use it is a 1:10 transformer. Basically a 12VAC transformer turned round. The current rating of this and the transistors in the chopper define the max current at the output.
Simplest design would be to chop up the 12V DC into a square wave, pass it through a 1:...

Re: 60 Hz household line frequency counter
Seems a very simple way would be to use an integrator (op amp with a cap in the feedback loop.
In integration, the function is the value of the area under the curve. If a sine wave changes frequency this area will change and so will the output of the opamp.
Not as precise as a counter but usefu...

Re: Inverter transformer
If the inverter is modulating the DC at 60Hz, then most common power transformers [designs]should work. You only need to figure out the turns ratio. You can make a best guess based on the voltages you measure on a working unit or you connect a known AC voltage like 12V and see what you get on the ot...

Re: Data density on DVD
Data density on optical disks is directly related to the wavelength of the laser light used to read and write the disks.
Music CD's used the original IR lasers and have the largest pits DVD's (and someone correect me if I am wrong) use a shorter wavelength IR laser which allows for greater densit...

Use your outlook express (or whatever) to look at the Newsgroups. I just looked and there were dozens of math related groups. alt.math.undergrad had lots of mind boggling posts and some people trying to help. Some other groups seemed deserted except for the auto spam junk. Poke around in these newsg...

Re: clock display with scoreboard
You can "short circuit" the design of the clock by using any old digital clock with an LED display (LCD would probably work also but you will need to buffer the outputs even more.
Even if you build your own clock circuit, the last link in the chain will be buffering the low DC voltage of...

Re: detecting GPS signal
Detecting a signal at the proper frequency is one thing but verifying that it is in fact a GPS signal rather than some other signal requires that you decode the signal. This generally requires an actual GPS reciever (at least a 1 channel OEM module)

In my experience, when one or two colors go out on a VGA monitor it is the VGA cable or the connector at either end which has open or intermittent pins.
Does the On screen display (OSD) show all colors. Is the wash out only in video from the PC? If the OSD is OK then it most likly is the cable.
...

Re: any way to test a pic
There are basically 2 ways to test an IC. Functionally and parametrically.
Functionally, you have already tried, they don't work so they fail. If your programmer can read out (verify) the program, that covers some of the base but from your post, you suspect the problem will probably show up parame...

Re: Power Switch for computer
If you just want something to pull the plug at the appointed time, just about any light timer will do but that is a bad way to power off a PC.
You should search the download libraries of the web for an application that can do it for you if you don't want to write one yourself.
Check your BIOS s...
