Actually, as long as you have the expertise here's a related question....... I'm trying to select the right capacitors but there's so much confusing info I'm having a hard time choosing the right cap/combination of caps. I know tantalum capacitors are the ideal. Digi-key has tantalum caps which are ...

Well, I'm varying the power to the fan, possibly from 20V to 5V, the design is not finalized yet. Most of the time I think the fan will be used at a 20V-15V. I did consider using power resistors but a 25VA transformer gives me about 30VDC, so if I run the fan at 15V the current does go down but ther...

Great info guys, thanks a lot. If this project goes ahead I'll literally save thousands of dollars on this info. I'm controlling a DC fan from a 25V, 40VA transformer. The fan is rated 25VDC @ 1A so I'll control it down to about 5V. I know this to be true but any comments or additional info on the f...

Another non answer from Chris. Chris, just to let you know, I'm
perfectly capable of making these kinds of amorphous, non-technical,
guesses on my own.

Switching regulator inductor question

I'm making a power supply based on the L4960 switching regulator. Now the specs state to use a 5A 150uH inductor. BUT........ Is that spec based on POWER or SATURATION????? Cuz I'm running the power supply at about 1A. I guess the switcher pulses around 3-4A when it operates. Sooooo.... If the spec ...

Chris, is there any room in your calculations for the cost of the destruction of the planet by burning oil? A compressed air car still needs to get the origional energy from somewhere, but suppose it was a windmill? Suppose I had a windmill compressing gas all day. Can you do some quick math on the ...

It's weird to argue about two different points and never come to a conclusion. The arguments here, pro and con, really miss the reality. It is important to remember, compressed air, if it were viable, is only a DELIVERY SYSTEM. Like hydrogen it is only a DELIVERY SYSTEM. Oil, gas, hydroelectric dams...

If you're tired of "Chris math" and thirst for "real math" on this topic take a gander at the last pages starting on chapter 4 of this short document of cryogenic equasions for various gases. http://doc.cern.ch/archive/electronic/cern/preprints/at/at-2007-001.pdf "No ice-cre...

Here's some "Chris Math" from the archives........................ If you pulse that light at the right speed and reduce its current by the division # [and more] your are using with your time base, the light will be mostly off and have heavier pulses [more current] and thus be more efficie...

Chris, here's what I don't get. When we had a "discussion" about solar panels I said the current technology wasn't cost effective. You screamed and ranted about how America could do anything if the politicians would put their minds to it. You said "they said the Hoover dam couldn't be...

Welcome to the forum positronicle. Chris is well known here. He stands up for himself and America. He does tend to bully his pseudo-science around. If you disagree with him this is what you get. I think you're argueing over a fine point though, or rather, you're both on different points.

When you compress air doesn't it heat up??? And isn't that heat (some) of
your stored energy??? And if that air cools haven't you lost that energy?
